War goals, and italy gets 4 civs 6 mils in 4 focuses, generic gets 4 civs 3 mils in... 8 focuses.

I actually like the Italian focus tree, a monarchist path would be nice, but it has good tech and industry bonuses that are relatively easy to get to. Only minor portion of it is mutually exclusive or locked behind WT or some other restrictions, the Commonwealth trees are really bad for that. And since Italy is fascist at start you have quite a few options. I think it's one of the better playthroughs even compared to all the countries with updated trees.

Recent focus trees overall have been really good, I’d be down for more pure focus tree expansions

Waking the Tiger is when the focuses started being really good. China and Com. China have pretty good trees, Manchukuo has the Qing Dynasty, and Germany has 3 major unique paths with many sub-paths to go down. Then you go into Man the Guns with well needed reworks for the UK and USA, along with Mexico and Holland. Then La Résistance with Spain. TfV and DoD have nothing on most of the new trees, except maybe Romania with it's Balkan Domination path.

Yes, but all except the first few focuses on the tree can get locked out depending on the faction you choose in the hardcoded civil war.

You can actually. USSR is so outdated that you can just put a fascist demagogue and turn to Russian Empire without any problem. Only event you get is that Mongolia and Tannu Tuva gets out of the Comintern.
Similar thing with Germany's Rhineland path- you can flip Communist by hiring Ernst Thalmann as a political advisor.

Also half the foci break because they require you to be fascist, so for example you can't actually negotiate the Moscow-Berlin Axis (though you can still just ask to join the Comintern if you've dissolved the Axis). IIRC the invasion foci for the Nordic countries are also broken by this
You can even do this in combination with an early purge (in which you always select leniency in the trials) to keep literally every commander and political appointee. If you don't found an intelligence agency before the transition to fascism, you won't risk civil war either.
Poland having less than Canada and Portugal is also pretty funny.
