One way of how to play in 4-4-2
Hello everyone. I'm here today to tell you how I play in 4-4-2 and why I have great results against my opponents.
Everything begins with mentality. I'm a pretty much passive-aggressive person, so I want my team to reflect this behavior. So I need to defend well, and be quick enough to counterattack, but I also have to have manners to keep the possession of the ball when my opponent is giving me the ball.
This formation is specially fine for this mentality, because it defends with 8 players, but you can attack with the same 8. It's solid and won't let you down if you're defending. If it's set up correctly even if they pass the first line of defense, there will be someone covering up.
In the field, we have two options for defense: fast defensive players that can defend me against fast strikers with a stopper or tall defensive players with a Sweeper, that makes the life worse for the ones that cross. I like the second option as it is the counter for the today's meta.
As wingbacks, my personal taste is for creativity and ball keeping, so I like my captain Prowler and Sandberg. But you can make similar results with Producers, Wizard or Marksman, it really depends on how do you play. If you like a more defensive and consistent option, you can also use a guard here.
Wingers are the duo with your wingback. And they will become one of the most important pieces of your game. Use a fast player (it can be a defensive one, it doesn't matter as long as he can cross). Try to balance this player with the wingback (example, if you use speedster here, use a guard as a wingback). They also have a function to man mark the opposition's wingback, so make sure you won't be always with him in the attack.
The central middlefielders are the heart of your game. Here is where you define your style. Do you want a possession game? Use Warrior and Commander. Do you want to mimic the 5-3-2 meta? Use Commander and Hammer. Do you want to have a strong counterattack? Use Engine and Voyager. The combinations are nearly infinite and I used a lot of them and they all worked.
For the Strikers, I recommend you to use at least one fast player. The others will create great chances from behind so you gotta make sure someone will have them. Matsumoto+Sabre works here, but Speedster+Menace or Speedster+Intruder works too.
This lineup will strongly oppose 5-3-2 as you can steal the ball in the Middlefield (where 4-4-2 outnumber it) and run towards an easy goal.
If anyone want it, I can explain how to play in 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1 too. My job here is to make things worse for 5-3-2 and 3-5-2.
