Lord Of Heroes - Detailed Normal Story Progression Guide for Free to Play (F2P) Players / Light Spenders
INTRODUCTION
Hello Everyone,
First off, I hope you like this guide. Feel free to post any questions in the comments as I will keep track of this. Also, I apologize in advanced as this guide is a VERY LONG read.
I wanted to make a quick post for beginner players venturing into normal mode and trying to progress. The reason I made this is because there are some guides online, however the information is very scattered and for me it was extremely difficult to find, so I wanted to put what I have learned in one place. Hope this helps.
If you come across this and are further along, feel free to also add your tips in the comment section if there is anything I missed. I will have an edit section at the end of the guide and credit you for your suggestion.
If you guys like this guide, and want to support more content like this in the future, feel free to follow my profile here and check out my youtube channel where I will be covering more of this type of information:

MOVING ON:
SPOILERS - THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS ABOUT THE FINAL BOSS IN THE GAME AND GENERAL SPOILERS AS WELL. THIS IS NECESSARY FOR PLAYERS TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOME DECISIONS ARE BEING MADE. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED CLICK AWAY NOW!!!

================================================================================
FIRST CONTRACT
The first contract is really up to you and what you want. Krom is a better overall character, but if you want damage, he is NOT the one for you. He has great utility and you should pick him though, as you will get damage from other characters.
Krom - He is a tank and is good with speed. His main use is his skill ability as it increases everyone's action gauge (which gives them a turn to move sooner than the enemy) which can help with PVP as well as story progression vs bosses. Basically in Coliseum if they have Krom and you dont, chances are you lose the battle. This is important because after hard mode, this will be one of the only methods left over for you to be able to get crystals. The higher rank you are, the more crystals you can get daily, so having Krom will help with this.
Lairei - Excellent AOE farming machine. She is an overall balanced pick that has decent single target damage, great AOE damage, and some debuffs. Pick her if you want someone that can clear waves faster. I would say the only down side to her is that if she is your second contract, by the time that you get her you will most likely have finished Normals / Hard mode, and so you will most likely want to go with lucillica as the problem in extreme mode is more centered around killing bosses rather than clearing the waves. By the time you hit extreme mode, you will have other characters that can do this for you. In addition to this, the debuffs she offers are also available through other characters which you get for free very early on anyways, via Fram and Mei Ling.
Lucillica - DO YOU LIKE 1 SHOTTING BOSSES? DO YOU LIKE HIGH DAMAGE NUMBERS? DO YOU LIKE KILLING THE ALLIANCE RAID FASTER? WELL LOOK NO FURTHER!!!!
Seriously she is probably the best boss killer in the game, however that's about all she can do. She has no real use outside of the alliance raid and maybe killing major bosses in the story mode.
That said, my two picks would be Krom and Lucillica. The rational here is because Krom is a turn bar booster and one of the few that you can get as an F2P player. His utilitiy is insane and when skilled up, his skill 2 not only boosts your turn bar but his skill 1 also boost your burst gauge. The reason to pick lucillica over Lairei is because by the time you get your second contract hero, you will most likely have completed Normal and Hard mode, and your heroes will be strong enough in extreme to be able to wave clear through stages easily, and where you will lack is being able to kill bosses faster before their damage takes a toll on your team. In addition to this, she is one of the best free to play heroes for the raid, and she will carry your damage there. I would not use her for PVP though as she doesnt have AOE but you can swap her equips around to Helga or something else.
BONUS - Olivia - You get her as an extra "contract" (not really a contract) just for signing in 7 days for free. This occurs simultaneously with your first contract so there isn't a choice to be made, you just do it. She is a great marksmen, but she isn't really a choice, you just sort of get her, which is awesome! she is excellent as her regular attack gives her turn gauge manipulation, her skill slows enemy's and is AOE, and her burst skill.. well lets not talk about that.. just dont use it :)
KEY THINGS TO PAY ATTENTION TO
These are critical things that you should be aware of that may not be presented to you without doing some digging, so I'm putting them here.
- REDEEM CUPON CODES ASAP! We dont know how long these will be available, so just get them now. Here is a link to an online guide that contains valid coupon codes. These can only be used once so just go ahead and redeem them as we dont know if they will ever expire: https://www.freemmostation.com/guides/lord-of-heroes-coupon-code-list-redeem-free-rewards/
- JOIN AN ALLIANCE ASAP! It doesn't matter who what when where why, just do it. You will accumulate stuff from your alliance members and the sooner you do it, the more you can accumulate. This is like a 401k people, if you get in too late you wont reap the rewards but if you start early boy oh boy do you get some dough!!!
- BOTTOM LEFT PROGRESS TRACKER - When I started, I didn't even know this existed, but basically, at the bottom left of your screen at the citadel, there is a progress tracker that gives you rewards for doing certain tasks. You are going to want to progress this with the story. I wouldn't just blow through the story as fast as you can, go along and do what its asking you to do, and progress the story when it tells you to clear the stage. This will be the best for you later on.
- MONTHLY EVENTS - Every month, there is an event that will spawn event bosses on stage 2 of maps you have already cleared. Beating these bosses and the stage gives you event currency which can be used to exchange for things like Crystals, Gold, Ascension / Promotion Materials, Skill up stones, etc. These are very useful and during the event it is highly recommended to farm these as much as possible until you have everything from the event store you need. In addition to this, there are some default rewards that can be collected when the entire lord of heroes player base is farming them and so whenever we achieve an event milestone a reward is given to all participants.
- News, Messages, etc - Sometimes the developers will drop in awesome codes (like the above) to redeem free stuff. These will come in at the top left under the bell icon as "News". At the top right you will see a little envelope, this is how you will receive rewards from the game for completing tasks and such, I would redeem these when possible EXCEPT ENERGY. Read further and you will understand why you shouldn't redeem the energy right away.
- Ally vs. Occupy - In the story mode, you will be presented with the option to ally with a specific nation or occupy. The selection you make does not really change the story, as in, you wont lose out on content, but it does alter the conversations the characters have with each other before they continue into the region or ally with the region. You can choose whatever you like here and it will be just fine.
RESOURCES & HOW TO USE THEM
Skill Up Stones:
For normal mode, if you come across a skill up stone, do NOT use it. Stockpile these for later. You will get more useful characters to use them on, but for now, just pretend they dont exist. If you get them, hold onto them. Don't use your gold on these early as its a ton to invest in for very little pay off early on. These will matter once you have built your characters out later on, and so dont bother using them while you are in normal mode. These are more to be used for end of Hard mode / Extreme mode.
Crystals:
These are a very important resource. These will help you progress your characters itemizations as well as allow you to obtain new characters. At the beginning, you will get quite a bit of these but use them sparingly as they become hard to get a hold of the further you progress.
As you progress further into the story, you will eventually need to use these to get items and characters. In my opinion, these are the things in order that you should invest your crystals into:
- Alchemy - Striker - 1500 Crystals/2000 Crystals Contract - Strikers are the highest damage dealing class in the game and you get Helga early on and she can carry your damage really hard through most of the story. Srikers will be your main damage dealers. You can opt to purchase Blue Schneider instead of helga as that is a good investment too, and so investing crystals early on to do few pulls of alchemy for some gear for strikers is a good idea. This will help you clear some of the harder bosses early on. Also if you went for lucillica in your first and second contract, it is well worth it to go for the 2000 crystal guaranteed artifact pull for lucillica as the gear can be used on other strikers but will give her a skill up which is great for her.
- Hero - Water (Blue) Vanessa - Cleric - Blue Vanessa is in my opinion the best cleric you can have on your team. If you only wanted to get one of them, I would take blue every time. Blue Vanessa costs 6000 crystals to obtain. I opted to get both (replacing charlotte with one) and that is because her skill heal is massive, and her ultimate revives fallen heroes, so if you want to 3 star stages, she can really help out with that. Sometimes she has saved my boss fights were she is the only one alive and has just enough HP to bring everyone back to life so that I can continue the battle. She is by far the best hero for the raid and is worth every crystal. Seriously, do not sleep on her, you MUST have her if you plan on playing this game beyond normal.
- Hero - Fire (Red) Vanessa - Cleric - Red Vanessa is another one of the best clerics you can have on your team. I cannot stress how important she is as without her, I would not have made it through hard mode. That said, looking back to it, I could have done just as well with charlotte and if I had taken my time in normals. Her skill and burst ability is where she shines. Her skill gives everyone on the team a 2 turn defensive buff, and also heals them based on her defense. This is very important during boss fights that have AOE or that have attack buffs as this can greatly negate their buffs and damage. Her burst skill gives everyone on the team a one turn invincibility. This means that if timed right, you can use her burst ability right when a boss is about to use theirs, and completely negate it. She requires you purchase blue charlotte (3000 crystals) and then using renown to unlock her (500k). You dont need her for normal mode, but you should work towards getting her as you will need her for later on, however she is not a must for normal mode, just dont spend all your crystals otherwise you will hit a big wall once you get into hard mode.
- Alchemy - Cleric - Any Banner - 1500 Crystals - Clerics are a must in Hard mode, so its good to start putting a little bit of funds into them once you have gotten a decent amount of striker gear and have purchased one of the Vanessa's. I would do at least 2-3 pulls of these and see if you can score some good equips for your clerics, but wait until either the end of normal mode or beginning of hard mode to do it. Damage on Helga is more important early on.
For normal mode, this is how I would prioritize crystal usage. I will eventually make a hard mode guide going into more details on how to invest them.
Gold:
This is going to be your main resource that you can use when you are upgrading equipment. Early on, its okay to upgrade low tier equips, however dont spend gold on upgrading anything below 5 stars past +3 or even +6. Beyond +6 it starts getting expensive, and you dont want to waste your gold on equips that are not good. You will be able to get much better ones later, so save it for those.
Experience Potions (Elixir of Insights):
This is a good resource you can use to level up your characters. My advice here for early on is to hang onto these, and only use them when you get stuck. When you get stuck, prioritize your damage dealer with experience potions (Helga) and your cleric first, then the rest of your team. I wouldn't dump the entire stack of EXP potions on one character using auto select either. give them a few level ups, try the stage again, did you win? good, keep going until you get stuck again. Try to level everyone up somewhat evenly, for a balanced team but your key members will be strikers and clerics.
Don't forget to grind your hall of experience and in normal mode, lose your coliseum battles as often as you can for more elixirs (more on these later).
If you are using just basic experience elixirs, here is how many you will need to level your hero from level 1 to the max level of each respective star rank:
3 Star - Level 1 to 30: 78 potions
4 Star - Level 1 to 40: 252 potions
5 Star - Level 1 to 50: 767 potions
6 Star - Level 1 to 60: 2,271 potions
TWO STAR ELIXIRS = ABOUT 3 OF THE ONE STAR / BASIC ELIXIRS
In total, if you wanted to theoretically level a brand new character from 3 star level 1 to max level 6 star, you would need 3,368 basic elixirs.
Energy:
Energy is very important. I made the mistake early on of just stockpiling a ton of it, and never using it. The problem here is if you have maxed it out, it wont recharge, so you are losing out on a lot of potential free resource that the game will give you. Here is what I would do - when you get energy from feats, Cannae, or anything really, keep it in your message box. Do not accept it right away. Go use the energy you have to farm and then you can use the additional energy. Just make sure you use it before 99 days as it expires. When you are stuck on the story, dump your energy into the primeval halls > hall of trials. Go grind out the highest stage you can set to auto and win 100% of the time. This will help fill your weekly dungeon rewards progress bar which gives you a ton of useful stuff as well as give you some items that you can use, however most will be garbage and so you can sell for LOTS of gold!
Renown:
Aside from getting one of the Vanessa's, hang onto this resource and dont spend it on anything as it will be useful later for ascending your characters.
TEAM COMPOSITION (WHO TO INVEST / NOT INVEST INTO)
Team composition is important in this game, and it will definitely make your progression easier, however you can also do whatever you like and it will work fine, its just like any other game, if you follow some specifics, you will progress faster. Ideally, your team will include at least:
1 Striker (main damage dealer)1 Cleric (main healer)1 Guardian (main tank). The rest can be secondary damage / utility characters of your liking.
By the time you get to the final boss in normal mode you should have about 10 heroes if you took your time. If you are like me and rushed it, you most like dont have earth Olivia yet, so you will have 9. Here are the 10 characters:
Water Fram, Earth Charlotte, Light Johan, Earth Schneider, Dark Mikhail, Fire Zaira, Fire Mei Ling, Water Helga, Earth Astrid, Earth Olivia.
For the final boss in normal mode, this is the party I used to win, and these are the characters you are going to want to invest in most likely, but some can be subbed out.
WHO TO INVEST IN / EXAMPLE TEAM COMPOSITION:
Hero Disclaimer - There is no right or wrong in this game, you can run whatever you want, but some heroes will make your life easier. These are just the hero's that I recommend based on experience.
Item Disclaimer - Because this is a gacha game, you wont always be able to get the recommended stats I propose for each hero. If you dont have that stat, I would default to tanky if you can, otherwise just give them whatever you have. I used the auto assign for equips all the way through towards the end of normal mode.
General Item Rules (flat vs % stats) - If you are looking at % stats vs Flat Stats, here is a basic breakdown. Please note that I only included stats that had a flat and % amount, other stats do not have this and so they are not included. Also, this may change as the game gets patched and updated, but as of right now this is pretty close to the right stats from my testing:
- Health: If you are over 4.5-5k base HP, take % HP, otherwise flat HP is better
- Def: The breakeven point is around 500 DEF so if you are under 400 take flat, over 500 take %.
- Attack: Same as DEF, if you are under 500 base attack go %, otherwise flat is better.
- Speed: Speed is always flat, but remember, the only main stat items that have speed are ring and pendant. The rest will have it only in the sub stats.
MY FAVORITE F2P HEROS / TEAM COMP:
- Helga (Striker) - She is your main damage dealer. She is going to be the one that is going to hurt the bosses the hardest, so keeping her alive is your goal. You can get Blue Schneider with some crystals instead, but ideally early on just use Helga.
Suggested Items - Both Helga and blue Schneider want % Attack or flat attack depending on base stats (see general item rules above for choosing which to go with). Look for 1 or 2 health items, and your ring and pendant can be kind of whatever you want, but speed, percent crit chance, and if you have over 90% crit, % crit damage are good if you can get it, otherwise stick to Attack or HP/DEF. The pierce set is what you want with Helga.
- Charlotte (Cleric) - I used her to spam out her burst skill for the shield over and over again vs the final boss as well as other bosses. She makes life easy. You can swap her out with Red/Blue Vanessa later and use their equips amongst each other.
Suggested Items - Her shield scales off of HP, but get one or two HP items on her, and start prepping for speed and defense as that's what you will want on the Vanessa's when you get them. Healing set with those stats is great, but hard to get. Remember to follow the flat vs % stat rule above on the HP and DEF items.
- Fram (Guardian) - She is your main tank. Her skill allows her to AOE stun enemies (doesn't work on bosses) and her burst ability is an attack break, which lowers the amount of damage a boss can do. She is your frontline and she helps deal with strong bosses. You can swap her out with Krom once you get that contract and their items can be swapped back and forth.
Suggested Items - this applies to all guardians. go for tank items, again same as charlotte, but you can have a mixture of both. Having some debuff rate will be nice in helping land the stun and attack break on burst. Otherwise just HP and DEF is your friend. The Aegis set is great if you can get it. Follow the general item rules above for when to take % vs flat.
- Earth Astrid (Sniper) - She is a sniper and does some damage, but mainly she is there for the skill which removes the last buff the enemy used. She will be useful against bosses that buff themselves, and makes clearing the final boss easier as you can strip away his buff. You can interchange her with Green Olivia once you complete the 7 day login period and you can share their equipment. I prefer Astrid in normal mode, but in hard mode I feel that Olivia will outshine, but for normal mode I would use Astrid, especially against the final boss.
Suggested Items - Since we want her to survive so that she can apply her skill debuff and strip boss buffs, just build her tanky for normal mode. One or two damage items is fine, but the rest should be def and hp so the final boss doesn't 1 shot her and she can remove his buff like she needs to. Surge set is great on her if you can get it. Long term, she may be used as a side piece to Green Olivia, you can build both somewhat bruiser, basically with a couple HP, couple Attack, Speed, and Def stats.
Honorable Mention: Green Olivia - she is more for hard mode, but if you wanna use her, build her with lots of speed, one or two attack items, and one or two defense/HP items. If you can get the surge set that would be amazing. Her and Astrid will build the same and can be swapped in and out depending on the situation at hand and you can share their items.
- NOT MIKHAIL (Take Light Johan/Fire Zaira Instead) - ITS A TRAP! TRUST ME! Basically, you can pick any of the other characters, just dont pick Mikhail. Mikhail is really bad early and the final boss in normal mode basically one shots him because of the elemental bonus, and he gets resets off kills so if one of your team members die, you pretty much get wiped out. This last spot you can use as you'd like, basically, I would choose either Light Johan, Earth Schneider, or Fire Zaira here as they are quite beefy and you just want someone that can survive here, maybe do some damage and provide utility. In hard mode, this will most likely become another cleric spot (red and blue Vanessa together) as that will make the story grind much easier. Personally, Light Johan is your man here with his provoke. Build him a bit tanky so he can take the hits.
Suggested Items - You will want to build Johan and Zaira similar to each other. They both need to be tanky. For Zaira, build her like Fram but minus the debuff rate, for Light Johan, build him with the revenge set if you can, however if you cannot, go ahead and build him like Fram as well. Johan's goal is to just be a meat shield so that when he provokes the enemy, they dont kill him, and Zaira is just a good overall front liner.
CHARACTERS NOT WORTH INVESTING IN:
These characters are fine in normal mode, but once you enter hard mode they get outshined by the characters above, so you can invest in them if you'd like, but just know it will be better to invest in the above instead
- Earth Schneider - He helps early on, but the characters above are just better at what he does than he is. If you want to build him, I would recommend a bruiser build with a little bit of Att, Def, HP, and some Debuff rate for the sap he can apply if you have it.
- Dark Mikhail - This guy is a monster in late game once you have built equips on him, but in normal mode he is just terrible. You will not have enough resources to get use out of him and he will just get one shot. He is someone to put away for now, but maybe come back to in late hard / early extreme to start building if you really want to. If you want to build this guy, most of his abilities scale off Speed, so I would say max his speed ASAP and go for a combination of Attack and HP with crit rate % sub stats if you have it.
- Fire Zaira - She is a tank, but Fram is also a tank and offers more utility. You can use her as another meat shield if you like. She as good base damage, but Fram just does a better job. You can build her exactly the same as Fram except you dont need the debuff rate if you dont have it.
- Fire Mei Ling - She is kind of squishy and ends up being a liability. There will be better characters like Lairei which you can get in the contract that do what she does, but much better. Again, you can use her if you'd like, just that other characters will help you more. If you use her, you want to build her with mostly HP and Attack Items. Speed will be nice on her as well.
RECOMMENDED DAILY FARMING TASKS
Aside from doing the story, this section will go over a few things I would recommend everyone does daily in order to help progress their gameplay. Remember, this is an RPG. You dont need to rush through the story. If you go too fast you will hit a wall and get stuck. Taking it one day at a time will lead to a more linear progression, and also help you later on in hard/extreme mode if you get into the habit of doing these tasks.
- Coliseum - While progressing in your normal mode, go check into coliseum as one of the first things to do when you open the app. If you have coliseum tokens, use them. Don't worry about winning while you are in normal mode. What you want to do is collect your crystals, and lose really fast. Pick your weakest character and put them in the party alone. Face the opponents and lose, this will grant you 1-2k gold and 3 experience potions PER TOKEN. Tokens replenish hourly so just do this every 7 hours and you can get 42 experience potions by just investing like 10 minutes of your time if you can do it two times per day.
- MONTHLY EVENTS - As specified in the first section, monthly events contain a great deal of resources and should be prioritized during the event span so that you can collect the important resources. Check the news and banners on the left of the screen to see if there are any special events going on. If there is, you should try and see if you can farm the resources it provides. Its more access to free resources that you should take advantage of and prioritize. I would prioritize resources in this order: Crystals, Skill Stones, Renown, Striker/Cleric Ascension Runes, Gold, Experience Potions, and whatever else you can get from it after that.
- Primeval Halls - This is going to be another one of the main ways to get more resources and progress faster in the game. First, get as high as you can on the hall of experience and the one that gives gold. If you lose, dont waste your energy trying again, just get what you can and then head on out. Next, you are going to want to go into Hall of Trials, and grind the highest or second highest stage that you can do on auto mode - although it wont give a whole lot of gold up front, you get a TON of equipment. You will keep some, but most of it is trash and you will end up selling it. To put it into perspective, when I was in hard mode, I was clearing stage 5F of hall of trials and earning on average anywhere from 45k gold to 75k gold from selling the equipment every 6000 energy I used here.
- Alliance Raid - If you have enough heroes to participate in an alliance raid, do it. it doesn't matter if you win or lose, you will get alliance credits which you can use to purchase stuff later. For now, just stockpile these, you will use them in hard / extreme mode when you learn more about what you want to do with your gameplay.
- Expeditions - Complete the expeditions and send them out as often as you can. I would prioritize Experience Potions, then Renown, then Gold from the expedition reward choices when your heroes propose what to do.
- Mystic Shop - Go in there once you have unlocked it and go ahead and just redeem the free stuff. I have never once found anything useful for purchase in here, so for now just get the free stuff by watching the ads whenever you can and head out.
- Alchemy - You will get a free pull once a day, so use it on Striker/Cleric gear.
HERO PROMOTIONS:
Once you have reached the max level on your hero, it will be time to promote them. Please note that when promoting heroes, it is very important that you promote sparingly across the same class, as they share the resources needed to promote. That said, below are the heroes worth promoting to 4 & 5 star if you get to the point of wanting to promote them. That said, I wouldn't promote unless you absolutely need to, but here are my recommended characters. PS - always prioritize damage first when promoting:
Helga - She is your main damage dealer. She is worth taking to 5 stars in hard mode, but for normal she is fine at 4 star.
Fram - I would take her to 4 stars. If you feel like you need to up her to 5 stars because your Krom contract is too far away, do it, but she will ultimately be replaced by Krom who starts off at 5 stars.
Olivia/Astrid - I would take her to 4/5 stars, just dont do it right away. You will use her up hard and extreme.
In normal mode, those are the only ones I would consider for promotions. You wont want to promote charlotte yet as you will want to get blue / red Vanessa later, and those you will want to promote, but for normal mode, these are who you should promote. Most likely, you will only be able to promote Helga to 5 star and Fram to 4 star by the time you end normal mode if you are taking things slowly. If you go fast, you might only get Helga to 4 star and Fram might end up being 3 star.
