Will Quest 1 get 90 Hz with Link?

Discussion

I might have missed this detail. Zuckerberg seemed to imply at Facebook Connect that Quest 1 might get 90 Hz through Link since he said that Link would support 90 Hz, and that was before the Quest 2 reveal. The problem is he didn't specifically say Quest 1 will support 90 Hz. Has there been any confirmation from any source on this?

If they do give Quest 1 the option to do 90 Hz through Link, that could mean that Quest 2 would be a little less unlikely to get 120 Hz in the future.

Quest 1 isn't certified for 90hz. I doubt they're going to put money into certification for a headset that has already been discontinued.

I don’t think they even can. Once a product is released, can the FCC issue a new license allowing a change in functionality? I wonder if that has ever been done before. The little sticker somewhere that says the FCC license number on each Quest would be invalid, so I don’t think they can.

From what I have been able to find out, any recertification would only apply to devices manufactured after the recertification.

Doesn't really matter though, the Q1 does not have the horsepower to process 25% more frames without further lowering image quality.

No, but people really only cared about 90hz for link. That would have been problematic anyway due to the decoding limits on the Quest.

Which is exactly what I just said in the txt you quoted. It does not have the horsepower to process more Oculus Link data than it already does.

It needs to be certified for a higher framerate? Nice example of bureaucrazy stifling invention. FFS its just a change in framerate for the better.

Until the higher framerate creates more heat and the display that’s inches from your face catches fire.

Quest 1 will never get 90Hz because Oculus would have to recertify the device with every relevant consumer electronics body in every part of the world in which they sell it. That's not going to happen.

Q1 does not have the horsepower to decode 25% more frames per second so the certification doesn't really matter.

Quest can decode video at 90fps at high enough resolutions. Remember that both Link and Virtual Desktop do a form of foveated encoding that significantly reduces the total resolution of the transmitted video stream. For example even on the highest quality setting Virtual Desktop encodes at only 2880x1440 (or 1440x1600 per eye with the most central portion being high quality and the edges compressed and then stretched back out after decoding) and 2880x1440@90fps is something the video processor can definitely handle.

Still moot of course.

Quest 1 Isn’t going to receive 90hz support for link even though it’s capable of it.

Quest 2 getting all the love with a 120hz update soon. 🤔

The Oculus team is small and doesn't have many resources please understand.

To be serious though, this may have just been a case where Quest 2 was in fact certified to run at 120 Hz just in case despite what Carmack somewhat implied, and Quest 1 wasn't (for 90 Hz).

Otherwise enabling 120 Hz on Quest 2 might be illegal.
