One of the things I'm most excited about for when we finally see Greywater Watch... (Spoilers Extended)
...is to see the damn heart tree/weirwood tree they use. I'm sure it will be absolutely awesome/terrifying.
At some point I think we get a scene at Greywater Watch (or somewhere near it in the Neck) and outside of the Hightower/Casterly Rock/Highgarden it is probably one of my most desire places to see.
Not only does Greywater Watch move:
Lord Jason hesitated. "A dozen streams drain the wetwood, all shallow, silty, and uncharted. I would not even call them rivers. The channels are ever drifting and changing. There are endless sandbars, deadfalls, and tangles of rotting trees. And Greywater Watch moves. How are my ships to find it?"
"Go upriver flying my banner. The crannogmen will find you. I want two ships to double the chances of my message reaching Howland Reed. Lady Maege shall go on one, Galbart on the second." He turned to the two he'd named. "You'll carry letters for those lords of mine who remain in the north, but all the commands within will be false, in case you have the misfortune to be taken. If that happens, you must tell them that you were sailing for the north. Back to Bear Island, or for the Stony Shore." He tapped a finger on the map. "Moat Cailin is the key. Lord Balon knew that, which is why he sent his brother Victarion there with the hard heart of the Greyjoy strength." -ASOS, Catelyn V
but their are so many plotpoints that seem to be converging there.
Plot Points that could be addressed/Characters who could appear
-
Howland Reed (GRRM has kept him out of the story bc he "knows too much" which is extremely true, as he probably has info on Tourney at Harrenhal, Isle of Faces, Greensight, Warging and most importantly the Tower of Joy.)
-
Hallis Mollen (While its possible that he is the hooded man, especially since Lady Dustin is looking for Ned's bones, his bones have not been seen north of the Neck and Hallis Mollen was last seen headed north with an honor guard/silent sisters/Ned's bones as the Ironborn take Moat Cailin)
-
Characters who have info on Robb's Will (Galbart Glover and Maege Mormont were ordered by Robb to leave from Seaguard and sail up the Neck and find Greywater Watch)
The Weirwood
We know absolutely nothing about what the Reed's use for a heart tree at Greywater Watch sadly. But we do know they worship the old gods, and are heavily tied to the Children of the Forest (possibly even descendants).
There are numerous POV options that could have to travel through the Neck to get North (or South) and we should also keep in mind that: Bran and Bloodraven can already access any heart tree/weirwood and in time Bran will learn to "see beyond the trees".
But I really want to see what this tree looks like and get a few questions answered:
-
Is it a weirwood? We know that thin soil cannot support weirwoods (Iron Islands/The Eyrie), can it survive in the Neck's terrain.
-
What does it look like? There are some pretty crazy looking weirwood/heart trees throughout Westeros. I can't imagine what one that exists in a floating castle would look like.
I admit it is very possible that there isn't one and they just use a grove in the swamp or something, but if GRRM has a floating castle, in addition to a 700 foot wall, I think he can find a way to get us a weirwood tree in Howl's Reed's Moving Castle.
There's just so much history, mystery and magic surrounding the area that I'm surprised I hadn't ever stopped to think about what they would use.
TLDR: Some thoughts surrounding Greywater Watch's weirwood/heart tree.
