Its gorgeous! I adore the fabric 😍
Thank you! The lining is awful to sew but it feels amazing on, I’m super lucky yo have bought the last of the outer fabric
Strong batman vibes from that first pic.
Love the fabric pattern.
Never even thought of this till now haha!
Think the fabric pattern makes it less heavy and more interesting to look at
Love LOVE Love this!! Well done!
Thank you! I’ve had a few people ask me to make them one so I’m starting to get the fabric together for a sewing marathon
Awh well have fun!! I may have to use this as inspo to make my own one of these days!! ❤️❤️❤️
Always happy to make for other people if you want me to!
But do! Any questions let me know! They’re deceptively complicated.
Awh thank you!! I’d like to take a shot @ it myself however I probably will be back to bug you with questions!! Thanks again & props to you! Very talented!!
This is beautiful!!
Thank you <3
Gorgeous!
Thanks! <3
Love all of it but something about that neckline is just absolutely getting me. Loooooooooove it
Yeah, the neckline won’t be for everyone but this is how it would traditionally sit for an unmarried woman of my age and if there were other layers underneath it.
Without a belt it sits more against the neckline like a western jacket would :)
Love it! A modern take on traditional clothing. Love the fit.
Thank you! I’m hoping I’ve done the original justice and not caused any offence but made it slightly more wearable; for me at least
I think I'd like it!
I’m glad? Haha
It's gorgeous!
Thank you :)
This is my favourite kind of outfit I love it it’s beautiful 🤩
Thank you! I’m in love with it and so happy I managed to make it! Now to wear it all over the place
It’s gorgeous! Is it a fairly easy project or a harder one?
I would say middle to hard, but then I made this in two days and on only 4/5 hours of sleep so that probably upped the difficulty.
It’s a lot of rectangles like any kimono/ hanten so you would think it would be nice and easy but the simplest patterns are often the hardest. The main issue I had was that there was no set pattern for this so I was having to flick between two patterns to create this one; plus alter the pattern to allow for pockets and a shorter length. Normally not an issue but the book I used is very sparse with instructions and only vaguely told you about ‘hacks’ you can do.
The pictures of the pattern pieces, as they should look traditionally, were also very annoying to read as they put the cutting, sewing, styling, folding and anything else that could happen on the same picture so they are very busy and can mislead you. Again, this could be the lack of sleep and the short time frame combined with the fact I’ve never made one before, but I made a lot of mistakes and had to re-cut things a few times.
Also, lining was a subject that was a little here, there and everywhere in the book and I had to look back at notes and look up western tailored jacket lining techniques to get the last bit done. If you don’t line then it’s a lot easier but also the extra finishings would be tricky in their own right.
Making it again now would probably be a lot more on the easy to medium difficulty level but I would recommend making one if you can set aside plenty of time and know your stuff a bit more, also maths helps a whole heap too!
There is another book I’m looking at buying which might be better to make a kimono with so will let you know when I get it what it’s like!
Okay thank you so much for the advice! I ordered a sewing book for something similar I’m gonna try and make it then alter another one 😁
I would wear the shit out of that!
Thanks! I’m planning to haha!
It’s such an easy wear and if you want me to make you one just let me know <3
I made this jacket pattern from scratch using ‘Make Your Own Japanese Clothes: Patterns and Ideas for Modern Wear’ by John Marshall as a basis. The book isn’t the easiest to understand so wouldn’t recommend it for a novice sewer as you need a really strong foundation to understand some of it as there’s the bare minimum in the way of instructions. I used the hanten jacket as a basis but added the overlap used on the kimono and extended the collar length slightly. Untraditional but I like the way it sits. Outer fabric is from Croft Mill in the UK, it’s a lightweight suiting material with the barely there pattern which I love. Lining is from Fabworks Mill and is a polyester viscose. It frays like anything but the drape and look when finished is amazing. Any other questions then ask away!
