r/Drugs AMA series: PCP (aka "Angel Dust")
Hey, everybody! Sorry about the unexpected hiatus, I came down with a nasty bug and decided to continue the AMA's today instead of last Monday. We'll have to skip ibogaine -- the next most requested drug in our poll of redditors -- for now as I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting steady dialogue going with people who have encountered it. Instead, we move on to PCP, a drug that can produce positive/sought-after results if administered properly, but is also shrouded in infamy due to several, high profile stories.
First synthesis: 1926 by current Pfizer subsidiary, Parke-Davis.
Intended use: Initially used as a WWII anesthetic for surgical procedures, the adverse effects lead it to be discontinued for several decades. After further attempts at human use and then animal use in the 50s and 60s, it was discontinued altogether.
Current research into medical applications: None.
Legality: Strictly illegal, though Erowid reports that small amounts are decriminalized in Portugal.
