I asked my wife what she thinks these scary movies she hasn't seen are about & wrote down her answers...

My wife is not a horror/scary movie fan, nor a big movie fan in general, so she has seen precious few horror movies - and those mostly only to humour me. Anyway, I asked her to tell me what she thought these movies are about, based on the title and anything she might have heard about them, and I thought it was interesting the details she had about some movies, and the completely inaccurate ideas she had about others.

  • The Descent - the scariest movie ever; (I asked her, but what is it about? - her answer: being scared)
    • context: a friend, and his wife, and I saw this in the theatre. The wife did not know it was a horror movie and was absolutely terrified by the experience. She proclaimed as the credis rolled that she would never go see a movie with us again.
  • It - creepy clown, Stephen King nightmare shit
  • Nosferatu - black and white vampire movie obviously
  • Pitch Black - really intense, shiny, car chase or something, is that true?
    • maybe she was thinking cars because of Vin Diesel being in the Fast & Furious movies?
  • The Shining - 2 hours of that guy screaming at the camera (I sussed out that she meant Jack Nicholson)
  • The Thing - about Antarctica
  • Train to Busan - has a kung fu fight - yes it does, we saw it on one of those [proceeds to describe hallway fight from OldBoy]
  • Drag Me To Hell - I’ve been spoiled, the person gets dragged to hell
  • Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - don’t know, puppeteers?
  • Alien Series - aliens popping out of people’s chests in a submarine
  • The Exorcist - someone’s head spins around
  • The Mist - fog that eats people or something… kills them?
  • Scanners - Christian Slater is in it? Some young cool people are in it. They hook themselves up to something and can, like, detect presences… alien presences or ghosts?
    • I think I worked out that she was thinking of Flatliners & Keifer Sutherland
  • American Werewolf in London - tourist jaunt about a werewolf who takes a trip to London, based on the title
  • A Quiet Place - heard about it on pop culture happy hour - some sort of presence or ghost or something that is activated by noise, and I think there’s a deaf child in it. And the guy from the office - John Krasinski. It was well received, you have to be quiet to enjoy it.
  • It Follows - I think I’ve seen it, there’s an epic scene in a swimming pool?
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane - a movie about aliens coming after the guy from Roseanne
  • Oculus - might be about aliens? Is it about aliens? You’ve told me about it several times and I clearly did not process it.
  • Green Room - probably about hanging out before a tv show?
  • Cube - I always thought might be a video game themed movie, so I am surprised it’s on this list. I think it would look like Tron.
  • Annihilation - sounds like a war movie

After this I made up a list of 40ish of my favourite/classic scary movies and she agreed to watch them with me. We got through about half of them, but then we had a baby, so that watchlist probably won't get finished any time soon. If people are interested, I can post up a collection of her 1-2 line reviews of the movies I did get her to watch.
