For those of you who like to solo in Runescape, why?

Discussion

I was just curious, considering this is an MMO.

Edit: It seems that I didn't provide enough info on what I meant. When I say solo, I meant in general where they rarely do any interactions with other players in Runescape, a game in the MMO genre, where people typically join because they like playing with other people. People can play how they want, but the thought just got me pondering for a bit.

Due to social anxiety, it's hard to talk at all so I just solo without worrying 99% of the time in all games. Being alone is just default for me and it's easier. I don't know how to interact with others, so i either stay silent or just get hated on and banned. I don't want to get banned, so I just dont chat. I left other MMOs due to being forced to play with randoms at scheduled times. It kept making my head hurt and i didn't like that fakeness from other players. Still if runescape was singleplayer i wouldn't bother playing it. Even if i don't interact with people it feels less lonely to have players around and it opens up a chance for something new. Doesn't matter how low the chance is, singleplayer games just feel like a dead end waste of time.

i have the same mindset about Singleplayer games, and that's the reason why I dont play them.

I know a lot of group pvm where you dont have to speak at all! The server where I am doing raids you dont have to speak at all- just listening in. And its a learner server so everyone makes mistakes there! Even the most experienced ones

TsunderInuPvM Hub is a Mistake :Strength:•

Well for me i cant even listen in a voice chat without almost freaking out irl duo to anxiety then i fuck up even more leave the group hope nobody even remembers me play with friends off for a month and change my homeworld. So i decided i dont even try group pvm anymore with my ironman

RSN_MEME_GOD:Attack: Attack•

When u get good at the game, solo is the best way to get money through pvm. Less hassle with finding teams and feel comfortable at doing it at ur own pace. I've done so many ed123 solos i dont really wana do eds with people because of the drop rate..

Freljords_HeartThis is not the mightiest tree in the forest•

Kinda true for overall pvm. 0-999% telos streaks if you can pull off is the best money still long term. Not sure the GP rates of Ed1-3 solos. I know story mode runs if fast enough are like 10-14m alone from the chest you get which pumps up the monetary value quite a lot. But aod 7mans and rago are then then the next best options

I play solo over 15 years.

Because i can play in my own pace, don't be dependent on clan ( never been in clan, only back in 2005 - 2007 pk and merch clans)

I don't like to chat or speak in game :D

Nobody is bothering me

And by playing solo i have more fun :)

Don't get me wrong, anyone can play how they want, but what makes come to an MMO, when you don't play often with other people and don't like to chat with them? Wouldn't singleplayer games be more fitting?

-5
Know_to:Coins: Lovely money!:RS3:•

I chat only when its needed in game - like minigames or when skilling together.

I can do most of the stuff alone.

And i am playing nearly two decades and still enjoying - and after couple more decades i think i will still enjoy :)

6
ForcotisOP•

You and me both, mate. Cheers to another two decades!

RogueThespian:Runecrafting: Doctor Mt•

That's the cool thing about RS. There's so little content that is required to be multiplayer that you can literally just play it as a single player game. Most of what I need from other players is to help get past GE limits.

ForcotisOP•

Some would argue that the fact that a lot things can be soloed, takes away from an interactive community.

0
bibimoebaba•

As in solo bossing? You'll get all the rewards without having to split and such.

8
ForcotisOP•

I meant in general, where pretty much everything they do would be solo and rarely interact with anyone in a MMO. From what I always thought, but could be mistaken, is that MMO's main factor that drive people in is playing and interacting with others. Do you see how I think it is confusing?

0†
bibimoebaba•

Yeah i get you. But to be honest, i played runescape on and off again since about 2008, and it was way more social back then. People would constantly talk, share info, ask about skills and such things. Nowadays there's the world 84 horror at lumbridge market, but that's mainly it

7
VonDoomVonDoom•

world 84 lumby is the place where I always mute chat lol aside from friends

6
bibimoebaba•

I usually just say "trump" and watch it go down

1†
San4311:Ironman:btw•

People would constantly talk, share info, ask about skills and such things.

Thing is, back then there were lots of new people, mainly children, discovering things. The same happened when Archaeology released: people were discovering things, sharing info and helping each other. Now everyone pretty much knows all the ins and outs, and if they don't you /wiki it.

3
ForcotisOP•

Hmm, what came first, the chicken or the egg? Have you stopped socializing because others have stopped? If so, what if they stopped socializing because you stopped socializing? Not to mean this in a bad way.

-1
bibimoebaba•

I still socialize, I'm in a nice small clan with mostly people that like to aswell. Though i have to admit, i afk quite a lot, watching videos while playing and stuff. Since runescape is such a grind, i cba with looking at the same tree falling over again and again, but i always socialize back when people talk to me

2
ymir06•

It is an MMO but to me it's a fun game with goals, MMO or not. Never felt the need to work with anyone but it's cool seeing people running around doing their thing

7
Azzarathos:Max: Maxed•

I like to have people around. I just don't like to talk to them IRL and in-game.

6
mporubcaPotato•

I used to play in group/community but some updates ruined the game (I won't comment on which because I'll get downvoted to hell). Many people don't realize it, but Runescape used to be way more social/community driven game than it is now, despite the prevalence of discords, streaming and group PvM we have now.

Runescape was much more like early social network or even real life imitation back then, now it's just another game.

The game itself is still pretty decent so I decided to keep playing it but I chose to follow the Iron way as it's way more satisfying.

Also as for MMOs in general this video is REALLY good analysis of the topic:

*cough* GE *cough*

1
mporubcaPotato•

Exactly. Most blame removal of wilderness or EoC, but introduction of GE is the real culprit. People are just in denial because it's very easy to get used to it and can't imagine playing without it.

0
--xi:Hunter: Rsn: xi•

ya i miss those days in Falador w2

0
mporubcaPotato•

I don't, but the game was much better back in that time

2
fobos89•

I like playing by myself, it's just relaxing to be honest. I'm either working on something outside the game, watching videos or doing whatever else I feel like doing while semi afking some skill or a boss or whatever.
I think it's a big point for many players that they can sort of play it on the side and don't have to be active the whole time.

A lot of the game is just watching numbers go up, but that's not everything to the game you know, it's nice that you can choose to interact with others whenever you want. I can choose to mine in a dark corner of the world all by lonesome while netflixing and the next moment I can choose to ask my clanmates to go do a boss hour, it's all up to me. That freedom is not something you find in many games and especially not singleplayer games.

So personally I don't think players who like to play solo would be better off in a singleplayer game, I'd say just play however you enjoy playing Runescape. :)

Bag440•

In terms of PvMing, when I mess up it's on me and me alone. If I mess up in a group I feel awful. If somebody else messes up I get angry then feel bad about getting angry. I don't need to share drops and do the annoying trade everything to one guy GE drop liquidation then divvy up the GP.

I've noticed I do a lot of afking while doing other stuff and that's not really conducive to being social. I also play at weird times because of work. To me, RS is all about setting goals, working towards those goals, and achieving them. If somebody talks to me I usually respond but I don't really initiate conversations.

I have lots of old friends who don't play anymore and as I've grown into an adult I didn't really search for new ones. I'm hoping one day a particular person will log in, I'd like to know if they remember me; we're totally different people now. Rooker234 if you're out there bro hmu lol. I enjoy talking to people, my friends list is just dead.

That's not to say I haven't made friends, just not many that are like genuine friends, just because they're on my friends list doesn't mean we're actually friends, and if they change their names I'm like who is that, why are they my friend, how did we meet, what did we do together?

I've tried clans but they never seem to work for me. It's either just a glorified friends chat and we don't do anything as a clan or sometimes I'm too much of a spicy edgy boy and I just type whatever and I don't give a damn how it's received. The ranks usually don't like that. This gets me in trouble IRL as well. I also don't give a shit about the citadel and capping. I don't like how there's the cliques within the clan who never want to invite anybody different. Sure, it takes time to build a reputation and friendship, but it seemed like it was always the same five people doing the same two or three activities together.

Maybe I've just been in bad clans that don't match me, maybe I was just a shittier person than I thought I was a few years ago, but I've tried like five different ones and haven't bothered to join another clan for a while.

xenozfan2•

I prefer to have face-to-face interactions with people, so even if I add someone to my friends list after a while I just remove them because I don't KNOW them. I'd love to interact with people, but forming lasting friendships through text is hard for me.

3
San4311:Ironman:btw•

Honest answer? If I'm doing stuff where I meet random people I'm usually, well, doing stuff. I 'socialise' when afk'ing a skill, which is usually in the middle of nowhere and is with my CC. Archaeology and Mining are 2 of those skills that did have me socialise with the people around me, simply because, well, there's people around you.

I loved Arch and Mining rework release for this exact reason. Most other things in the game, like hunter for example, are based on competition so naturally you're avoiding others.

3
Boomer091•

I get to play when I want to play. I dont feel bound to people or have people expect me to be online or do stuff with them. I choose what to do when I am online and when to stop. I like to have that freedom, so I dont mind playing solo. And when I play something AFK'ble, Ill just watch some youtube.

3
seanm826:Guthix: Guthix•

I used to do group stuff more when I was younger. Now that I'm older it's just stressful and exhaustive trying to do group stuff. If I'm soloing and mess up and misclick, oh well. If I'm doing team content I can screw over the whole team.

3
[deleted]•

If I play shooters I love playing with friends. Same goes for lots of other games on steam. But when I play runescspe I just want to want to play by myself. I am almost always watching movies while I play so I don't feel like talking with people while doing so.

Also compared to other games doing bossing is a bigger time commitment. Most people do a boss for an hour straight and I don't always want to do that. So I wouldn't want to piss somebody off if I need to randomly leave halfway through.

After I finish all the solo bosses for IFB though I might take up the group bosses.

3
TheHeadlessOne•

Opposite question, what do you get from playing in a group?

You compete for resources, compete for drops, compete for progress, quests cant be done together, achievement diaries (rare instances aside) dont benefit from group play, etc etc- very little in this game is actually built to encourage playing with others

3
MDogCous•

A lot of the content can be solo'd, that's probably why. The only content that's needs a group are the mini games, all of which are dead content, as the rewards aren't that great.

2
MasterMaka:Comp: Completionist :Comp:•

I like to play on my own pace, sometimes in the middle of the bossing hour I like to take random breaks, now that wouldn't be nice if I did it in a group

2
Know_to:Coins: Lovely money!:RS3:•

So much true!

2
ForcotisOP•

Bossing is a mental game sometimes, so I get that :)

FindikliRS:Max: Maxed | Professor Z•

Like most here have said: i like to play on my own pace. I used to be in a clan and they always nagged about mandatory events etc. Cant be bothered with that anymore so I decide to play it solo (since i also dont have any friends playing this game)

2
Rhysy4056:Comp: The wikian•

Cos other people get in the way

2
P7AC3B0:Comp: '03•

A few reasons.

For one, I've been playing this game since 2003, and I was in middle school then. This means that I'm now geriatric compared to most of the community that actively chats, so I don't share a lot of the same interests/problems as a lot of them and that makes keeping conversations more difficult.

Two, I still play like it's 2003. I don't go bossing and I don't train efficiently, which are the only 2 things anyone cares about anymore. Both of those feel more like a job than playing a game to me, and I flip regularly and have "old money" so I don't have to worry about PvM for cash. Without any knowledge on either subject, though, it again makes conversations more difficult.

Lastly, and probably the biggest one, is that I hate drama. I play RS to relax, and the last thing I want to see when I log on is a bunch of people arguing over real world problems. It's why I've never joined a clan, too; so much in-fighting and bullshit that I feel like some people log in just to start trouble. It's ridiculous.

Playing solo is just more fun than dealing with people nowadays. Whether that's a "me" problem or an "everyone else" problem I don't know, probably a little bit of both. I feel like the game wasn't always like that, but it could be nostalgia talking.
