What happens to Rohit Sharma in the IPL?

Rohit Sharma is arguably one of the greatest white ball players of this era. He is also the most successful captain in the IPL, winning 4 titles with the Mumbai Indians.

The problem however lies with his batting. Up until 2016, He was probably up there with one of the top batsman in the tournament. Since 2017 however, He has had a major drop in numbers.

This is strange because these numbers do not align with his numbers in the international arena. His worst IPL years in runs (2017, 2018 & 2019) are also his best international years.

Rohit uptil 2016

Matches: 142

Runs: 3874

Average: 33.69

50+: 30

Rohit from 2017-2020

Matches: 57

Runs: 1288

Average: 24.79

50+: 9

At first I thought this could be captaincy pressure but he's captained MI from 2013 - 2016 as well and his numbers have been very good. His numbers while captaining India have also been excellent.

So what has happened to him in recent years is a bit of an enigma.

At this point MI should just treat him as a pinch hitter and tell him to go for his shots from ball 1

tumseNaHoPayegaIndia•

He is not a pinch hitter though, he always takes 10-15 balls to settle, before he goes big.

Arjun7019:India: India•

Takes more risks early on . Not much pressure on him because of the strong middle order.

Or food is better in the IPL.

Are you kidding? You can't get better vada pav anywhere else than Mumbai.

22
supreeth106India•

Are you saying the Ambanis can’t get the freshest vadapavs flown in from Mumbai for their franchise captain everyday?

Garden vada pav in Pune says hi.

I know. With taak and chillies.

Pune for better misal pav and paranthas

Don't fight

Lmao

Then the strike rate must be 140 plus then ..why is it 130

1
PranayNighukar:India: India•

One of the thing might be that he isn't is much of a pressure to perform. So he can play however he wants to

52
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

I'm pretty sure this is not how he wants to play lmao.

AtomR:India: India•

I think, OP meant that he doesn't take it very seriously?

4
yogi4pmindia•

Me too think so. His body language tells it.

Man Rohit for Deccan Chargers was sooo good

Kinda opposite International form at the time tho

46
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

He was good for MI as well till about 2016. Then he dropped off. He scored 400+ runs in 2019 but still below par.

30
TheRichestCuck:Chennai_Super_Kings: Chennai Super Kings•

Literally the strangest thing But I think he was not playing as a opener in 2018 and shuffled a bit

But still VERY odd

17
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

Yea he played in the middle order in both 2017 and 2018. But he's been playing in the middle order almost his entire IPL career. So it's hard to pinpoint the exact issue.

_gadgetFreak:India: India•

Rohit and Rao are the only players used to score runs in Deccan Chargers.

JMD316:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

I just checked on Rohit Sharma stats

And this IPL most or all wickets of his have gone to Indian bowlers only.

Is it that he plays International bowlers well and struggles against his own

35
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

That's probably just a coincidence. I doubt that would be the norm even from 2017 - 2019

19
fakecricketplayerIndia•

Overconfidence?

-11
ipindrama:Australia: Australia•

Probably doesn't take his performance as seriously as he does for India, cause they're still winning without him contributing.

35
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

That's not how any experienced player approaches his game, let alone Rohit.

63
AtomR:India: India•

Why you guys get offended, whenever someone speculates this "doesn't take IPL seriously" thing? It's possible, because it's a franchise league, and he doesn't get the same determination as in international matches. It's understandable.

6
ipindrama:Australia: Australia•

How do you know that? Do you know him personally?

-19
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

I mean, I could ask the same question in regards to your original comment. I'm just questioning the logic of someone like Rohit "not taking his batting seriously'' just because others are doing well.

I mean, I could ask the same question in regards to your original comment.

I never claimed to know the answer tho, it was just speculation on my part.

I'm just questioning the logic of someone like Rohit "not taking his batting seriously'' just because others are doing well.

Others' performance doesn't really have a bearing on Rohit, there really is no logical explanation to this.

anirudh1595•

It's just the Finch/Maxwell situation. No real explanation to it. It just happens. Some voodoo shit where players magically turn shit at the time of the IPL.

35
chiklatala•

rohit earns his extra pocket money during ipl while in international cricket he takes things seriously.

30
Gvoid_OP:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

Rohit earns more from IPL than he does playing International cricket.

30
Indy_101India•

I have a feeling he will score big in the final.

12
Little_Bend_6451•

You predicted the future.

2
nextdoorrando:India: India•

He needs one good season like vk got in 2016... even vk was below par till 2016, might get his mojo back. I know VK is and was beast that season but I think 500-600 runns could be enough.

Even the stars are aligning 2020 Final will be Rohit's 200th ipl match can he score a match winning knock.

10
ParadoxD2:ICC: ICC•

we don't care his IPL stats , he is best in international cricket :)

9
apex_pretador•
  • Captaincy pressure, he doesn't have this burden on him in international cricket

  • Various possible factors like experimenting with batting order, minor injuries, etc.

  • The gap in stats is not that big, except avg.

  • He may be putting in more effort in international matches, and be more relaxed in IPL.

TheAR69:Tamil_Nadu: Tamil Nadu•

A 9 run difference in average in T20s is equal to 25 runs in any other format. Imagine if someone's ODI average dropped from 45 to 20. That's how much Rohit's average has dropped.

1
apex_pretador•

I said except average.

Also, are you implying that 24 avg in T20 is equivalent to 20 in ODIs? Wait what?

-1
TheAR69:Tamil_Nadu: Tamil Nadu•

No I said a difference of 9 runs equals 25 runs in any other format.

1
apex_pretador•

By that logic, he dropped from avg 89 to avg 64. Which is like going down from unbelievable to amazing

3
tumseNaHoPayegaIndia•

I seriously think he should demote himself to 3-4 and try if it works. He always gets done by new ball, if he survives the new ball, he goes big.

3
AtomR:India: India•

Finch & Maxwell say hi!

3
glade_dwellerIndia•

We expect too much out of him in Club/franchise games.

3
supreeth106India•

Much rather be this way than him shitting the bed in internationals and lighting it up in the IPL. MI can win without him. India depends on him too much.

3
MotaBhai_Official:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

(TLDR don't have any answer as such, just writing my thoughts ) I used to think that during 2017/2018 that he was shuffling his batting position too much that why he was having below par season but even in last 2 years it's been bad as well. Still can't figure out why, I went through his T20I record in the same period and they are so much better than his IPL record. It's really bizarre tbh cause it does looks like he cares a lot when he loses his wicket or while captaining. Even QDK bats very similarly to how Shikhar bats so it's not like their is chance in approach. I see the same for Maxwell, even though people think he doesn't care, I feel he cares for sure, just look at him when he fields or bowls, for some bizarre reason it's somehow not working.

2
tumseNaHoPayegaIndia•

I feel like all the bowlers knows some secret to get Maxwell out, he hardly lasts more than 10-15 balls.

2
MotaBhai_Official:Mumbai_Indians: :IPL_Champions: Mumbai Indians•

If that was the case then he wouldn't have great T20I record.
