r/Drugs AMA series: Amphetamine (AKA "speed")
Next up in our poll of redditors is a drug closely associated with the likes of Lemmy, Johnny Cash, a particular Lady in Red and half of dorm occupants during finals. Yes, today's AMA will be about methamphetamine's more trusted cousin, amphetamine.
First synthesis: 1887 by Lazăr Edeleanu.
Intended use: Originally as an inhaler, today it is used legally in treating ADHD (and sometimes obesity or depression) and used illegally as a recreational/performance-enhancing drug. Amphetamine use also seems to be condoned in many military operations.
Current research into medical applications: None.
Legality: Most, if not all, countries have amphetamine listed in their drug schedules in a category which states it can be used, produced and distributed with a prescription for medical use, but anything outside of this is strictly illegal. Portugal appears to have decriminalized personal amounts of amphetamine.
