LG B9 weird image issue.

Tech Support

B9 image issue

The image issue presents on all inputs and in the native menus. The solid purple square appears fine on the home screen, as does dark gray and black on images and menus. White sometimes shows the issue and sometimes doesn’t appear to. The Issue is most notable when yellow, green, or blue is displayed. Anyone seen something like this before and have any info or suggestions? I have a service request open with LG and am awaiting contact and scheduling of a service visit. However, I’d like to understand what the issue is or could be if anyone could shed some light on it here.

Background: TV was purchased 360 days ago, opened and setup two months later. Has a 1804 hours of usage at this point. Had 0 novice noticeable image issues until yesterday morning. Hooked up an Xbox Series X to it on 11/6/20 and a PlayStation 5 on 11/12/20, both were used for a few hours with no noticeable image problems. While reviewing the picture settings the evening of 11/12/20, I noticed the pixel refresher option and went ahead and scheduled it to run, not realizing it would auto run in about 200 more hours of use. The tv was turned off for about 30 minutes shortly after that, then powered back on. The message about the pixel refresh being interrupted was displayed. I checked the options and it appeared to still be scheduled to run next shutdown, so I thought nothing of it. On 11/13/20 when the TV was powered on the image issue presented. I ran a manual pixel refresh cycle, and waited for the TV to power back on. The image issue continued. I tried unplugging the TV for awhile, but at power up the issue was present. Last night I performed a factory reset immediately after which the issue no longer presented. We watched Chapter 11 of the Mandalorian using the native Disney+ app and no image issues were noticed. This morning at startup however the issue has returned. My assumption since the reset resulted in the issue going away temporarily, is the issue may stem from software in some way and not the hardware/panel itself.

Sorry for you man. Bought the same model this year, so far so good. Try to call LG support

I’ve seen something very similar on an older 4K LG LCD, calling support they said it needed repair and for me in touch with a repair company. Since it would have cost more than a new LCD TV at the time I just bought a new one and took the broken one to electronics recycle drop-off..

It could be something as simple as a crappy solder joint at a cable connector or the panel control board, or it could be the main PCB. Since the panel works intermittently and it’s just weird colours when it’s broken, the repair tech didn’t think it was the panel.

Your best bet is see what LG say about it. It’s definitely not something you can fix from a menu but I never narrowed down what needed fixing and probably a tech would have just replaced stuff until it worked. I’d be super interested in knowing what exact component failed to cause those kinds of patterns...

Warranty should cover this

Parts came in and tech came out to take a look. Panel was replaced and issue hasn’t presented since.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m thankful it happened when it did and not in a few weeks when it wouldn’t be under warranty any longer. I am concerned after the reset resolved it temporarily that the support visit may only result in a temporary fix and then getting further support may not be as easy. Guess I’ll just have to see how it goes.

If you have photo evidence of it and a previous repair under warranty, that should be enough, the repair tech will usually know what they’re up against.

What annoys me is that you can buy all the components (besides the panel) as spares pretty easily and cheaply. But none of the spares sites - even the good ones - explain what a new component can and can’t solve. If we know that this was just the little panel board, or a power supply problem, or something else it would make for much easier diagnosis of problems in places like this...

Looks like my issue has another similarity to your past issue in that it’s intermittent. The past few time it’s turned on after the factory reset the issue presented, but the most recent power on resulted in no visual issues.
