That was pathetic

That was Pathetic

by Keely Savage

Sometimes I read back the poems I wrote

I write most of my poems in the darkest hour

When I read them back, one often thought is

"Damn Keely, that was absolutely pathetic"

Because I was raised to be hard as nails

But alas, I am not

While to people reading these poems

They read as if i'm like this all the time

In some ways, I suppose I am

But I do have happy times

I'll be happy walking a hiking trail

Then we get to the scenic outlook point

"jump, just do it, it'll be a dignified death"

That voice again rings loud

Subconsciously my body moves forward

Then I snap back to reality and walk away

These thoughts are hard to live with

But this is one thing I believe people who don't have depression think

"they're always sad, if they're happy ever they're faking it"

Although the happy moments are few

They're still there

And that occasional warmth keeps me trudging through the voice

Whom I've affectionately named "Rebecca" because shes a bitch

Thank you all for caring about me

I really am "okay" per say

My poems are all written when its dark and bleak

But today is something really quite unique

And I hope you'll see that I am as "okay" as one can be

This made me giggle a little, especially the Rebecca part.

I was skeptical of the poem at first, because of the awkward repetition of words - back/ poem/ I/ read/ but I was very satisfied about everything after the first 3 lines. I really like the way you write- the little bit of humor put into the poem, the transition between lines and stanzas and how you get your message across clearly, no hang-ups.

Remember that you're not alone and the fight is worth it. It gets better!

Overall, I really, really enjoyed this! Please keep writing!

Im glad you enjoyed it! My last poem I wrote late last night made quite a few people concerned because its super dark. I wrote this one with a bit of humor to lighten my page a bit. Also, i feel bad because a girl named rebecca messaged me and said she wasnt mean haha *sweats profusely*

This would be awesome as spoken word poetry! I would love to hear this recited! It reads like a story but flows like a poem. Very relatable content too! I don't think I've read a poem about a poet and their poetry before!

Wow im a trendsetter (hopefully lol) but I never thought of spoken word poetry, i suppose id be pretty good at it. But that might be an option. Thanks for reading and your suggestion!

the preview on the subreddit's homepage only features the very first four lines, and it genuinely made me laugh out loud, even though i gather from the rest of it this probably wasn't your intention. i like the whole meta poem-about-writing-poetry vibe. i think the metre could definitely be sharpened up; some of it is really nice and snappy (e.g. lines 7-10) but some of it doesn't flow as well as it could. word rhythm is the kind of thing which comes with practice though, so keep writing and you'll 100% get there. using more punctuation might help but i know it's not everyone's bag when writing poetry. also, i dunno if this was intentional, but the phrase is spelt per se*. anyway, to finish up, i did really like it and i rhyming "unique" with "be" is a super good half rhyme and a great way to end things. keep writing man!

I don’t feel confident making any notes about the quality of your poem, as I’m still a bit new at all this, but I was particularly struck by the lines:

“I write most of my poems in the darkest hour When I read them back, one often thought is "Damn Keely, that was absolutely pathetic"”

I might be totally off-base here, but I interpreted the lines in the vein of my own lack of confidence in what I write. I don’t know what’s good, I don’t know what’s bad, so I used to go back and look at previous things I’ve written and cringe. Once I started putting my pen to paper and transcribing my poems, I opened up my journal with a little note to myself, which I thought I’d share a paraphrased version of:

“A note to the future reader: most likely just to myself, but I would ask they take it easy on me. I do not, by any means, have any delusions of grandeur about what follows. My intent here is to lend permanence to my thoughts and experiences in nature. So future me, don’t cringe when you look back at these. Try and remember the moments and feelings that inspired them first.”

I think my shame over past poems was rooted with a sprinkle of imposter syndrome & a bit of good old fashioned self-criticism, so reading this every once in a while helps me remember why I write anything in the first place.

Anyways, if this wasn’t all a big misunderstanding on my part, I hope you can find a way to remind yourself to take it easy on yourself ❤️
