Twilight Zone (2019) is a teeth grating cringefest
This is just an angry rant. But I’m seriously disappointed watching season 1. Spoiler warning.
I’m not sure how some of these episodes made it out of the writing room. The Comedian was just okay. Nightmare at 30,000 feet was decent. But nearly every episode after that has way too much hamfisted social justice tones that is so in your face it’s laughable. I was hoping to find some thought provoking horror or sci-fi, but it takes a back seat to the show shoving down my throat the fact that I’m privileged and oozing toxic masculinity.
Replay took an interesting concept and put a hot button sensitive racial issue on top of it. I didn’t have too much of a problem with this episode until the end scene at the college campus. The whole situation they set up there is so contrived and unbelievable.
Wunderkind was an obvious statement about Trump and honestly that one was hilarious. Not All Men was halfway interesting but kind of a played out concept. I feel like the writers discovered A Color Out of Space just before they wrote it. The toxic masculinity thing was so on the nose it hurts. I cringed hard when the random guard at the end told the woman to “smile more often”. You know, during a literal rage virus outbreak. Are women constantly bombarded with men telling them to smile? And seriously, is it really that offensive? I don’t get it.
Point of Origin is an agonizingly terrible attempt to tackle the issue of immigration. I found it very bizarre to compare actual immigration issues in the US to interdimensional meta-humans migrating to a different dimension.
I’ve actually been putting off watching the rest of the show because this hardcore social justice stuff is so offputting to me. I’m certainly no opponent of bringing awareness to these topics, but is the Twilight Zone reboot really the appropriate medium to be doing this? The original show always had some food for thought or a moral lesson, but it was never this in your face about it. I’m hoping the writing gets better by season 2 but I’m not counting on it.
Am I nuts or has this show just gone completely off the rails in the wrong direction?

I agree that this reboot is too heavy handed. The stories all seem to start out promising, but they have a turning point where they go from strong to weak very rapidly. As for the comparison of the originals, the social justice comments and morals of the originals were more nuanced and didn't club you with the message. I believe this reboot feels more Amazing Stories than Twilight Zone. That said I love Amazing Stories (at least First season) and was over all disappointed with its reboot as well.
