Hello everyone, I'm a previous player of Honkai Impact and I want to talk about what I know

Discussion

Edit: If anyone is somehow confused about it, yes I'm poking fun at the post on the front page with my title because its coddling Mihoyo way too much.

Edit2: Added a bit more info on Honkai's gacha, namely the difference in pity

##Mihoyo

  • Mihoyo is not new to the gacha game market, they are mostly known for Honkai Impact, and lesser known for previous title Gun GirlZ.

  • Honkai Impact has been running since 2016 in China, 2017 for a big number of asian countries, and 2018 for English audiences

  • They aren't being bullied for making Genshin Impact a success, it's called business and competition

##Honkai Impact

  • Is often described to be grindy but rewarding, allowing most players to gain most non-limited characters and shards (dupe system) to upgrade them through grinding

  • Is quite stingy with summoning currency, but is forgiven mostly because of the amount of farmable characters giving players who dedicate time a way to keep up with content difficulty, as well as the fact that they release characters at half the speed of genshin

  • Has two monthly subscription packs, one for stamina/energy, and another as a daily "gacha" box for shards

  • Has a free and paid battlepass much like Genshin, but rewards players for going beyond the "soft level cap" with smaller rewards.

  • The battlepass allows players to buy older gacha equipments on a set schedule through currency given by said pass along with events

  • They lock passives behind character dupes that give bonus effects not unlike Diluc's attack speed increase and Razor's defense debuff

  • They have very few characters who are "unusable" without dupes, this is however somewhat offset by the fact that they have gacha equipment for what is the equivalent of artifacts and weapons that have nearly double the effectiveness of f2p ones.

  • The equipment gacha is somewhat offset by the lesser amounts of character releases

  • Is very reliant on DPS checks with your biggest renewable sources of summoning currency coming from modes similar to Spiral Abyss, one like it, and another that is more like a boss rush

  • Said Spiral abyss-like modes use a ranking system that brackets similar leveled players as they compete for higher scores, which are mainly achieved by faster clear times

  • At one point the meta was dominated by a powerful ranged character as melee characters were often interrupted or killed easily, and was changed by the introduction of a stronger shield character whose shield regenerated naturally when avoiding damage and ultimate basically made it near unbreakable while also buffing damage and gathering nearby enemies (aka none of our shielders)

  • Has Open world modes that likely was the basis for Genshin, as well as QOL features like Keybindings in their PC port which they for some reason forgot in Genshin.

  • Has a pity system on banners with a very visible counter to see where you are at, and character pity is not a 50/50 (IIRC 100 pulls) and has a 2% rate

  • Dupes however don't automatically give you enough shards to go up the rank(Constellation)

  • Honkai does have a similar pity to the 50/50 however, it is in the equipment gacha, where if by the time you pull X amount, you are guaranteed to pull one of the rated up equipment that you have not pulled yet.

  • Though just remember that like most games some of these pity systems didn't always exist, but at the same time, coming from Honkai you can feel that they reused their system but tweaks.

  • The end-game dps style has similarities, where it's common for players to stack buffs and debuffs on an enemy, and let a main damage dealer burst the enemy down

So yes, Mihoyo isn't some newbie here, they have experience with their current monetization, they've had shield centric characters, and their end game consists of DPS/burst being the biggest factor.

Please remember

  1. Investments are always risks, Mihoyo shouldn't be rewarded for "investing all their honkai earnings" into genshin if they do things poorly. That's just business, and lets not forget that unlike your favorite non-live service game, Gacha games earn way more for way less, and will continue to.

  2. This game isn't some "beta" testing, it's been tested for quite a long time, has been given plenty of feedback from the chinese community, and despite all that, lack common QOL that is present not only in most games nowadays, but even their own previous game.

  3. You aren't destroying this game by criticizing it, you can be critical of something because you see its potential wasted. But at the same time please don't go overboard, some people send death threats or simply talk shit about the game. We have facts, use them in your criticism. Give them reviews, post on their social media, if you wanna do things, do it right.

  4. They've earned 400 Million USD from their MOBILE earnings alone, they don't need your coddling, they're doing fine in their revenue.

I'm not asking for them to be incredibly generous or to not make mistakes and remember every little QOL they've ever done. But coddling them when people are getting mistreated after being hacked, cries for security are ignored, and their monetization of dupes possibly getting worse isn't going to help the game.
