Outside of contacting an MP, is there any recourse to find out the status of an application?
I applied for my spouse visa extension 188 days ago. My MP has not been helpful and provides the same answer. Are there any other options? I am unemployed and can't get a new job while my application is pending.

When did you do biometrics? Your application runs from once biometrics is done.
Also if its spouse visa extension that means you were on spouse visa before, correct? As long as you applied prior to your previous BRP expiring then you are protected by Section 3C leave and you will pass a right to work check while your application is pending.
Have you followed up with the HO requesting that your claim be escalated?
What have you asked from your MP? You need to give specific details about your timeline and you always have to tell an MP what you want from them - you need to ask them to escalate your application with the HO directly as its been longer than 8 weeks since you did biometrics.
I do pass a right to work check, but people don't want to hire someone who might lose the right to work any time between now and whenever the Home Office makes a decision. At least this has been my experience twice.
I have asked the MP exactly this, to have my application escalated.
I will follow up with the HO today. thank you for the suggestion.
To clarify: I did my biometrics on August 20th
Oh frustrating. It sucks that there's not more of an understanding of how the visas work.
Theres unfortunately not much to do apart from keep pressing the MP and following up with the HO asking to escalate.
Given you did biometrics on August 20, you're well over the 8 weeks.
If you follow up again and don't hear in a week, I'd also try the HO complaints email address. They say the complaints email address can't speed up processing but it's another avenue for expressing your displeasure with them.
