JD as well according to Britton
What’s does this mean exactly?
It means he will be eligible for arbitration this year and will have four total seasons of arbitration (2021-2024).
If he fell short of Super Two status, he would have made the league minimum again in 2021 and would have had three years of arbitration from 2022-2024.
Bottom line this is good for Dom personally since he will make more money over the next four years than he would have otherwise. He will be slightly more expensive for the Mets but that is far less of an issue now than it was in the Wilpon era.
It doesn’t affect when he will be eligible for free agency (after 2024).
How does a player qualify for Super Two status?
There’s a threshold for games played as opposed to service time (like arbitration is normally earned) I believe
It’s a little tricky. MLB takes all the players who have between 2 and 3 years of service time. The top 22% of players in that group qualify for Super Two and the resulting fourth year of arbitration.
The cutoff changes from year to year. This is why you usually see a wave of call ups around mid-late June (in a normal season). That’s around when the Super Two cutoff passes in an ordinary year but teams don’t know the exact date in any given year.
I remember Kris Bryant and the Cubs getting into a major battle over his Super Two status before he was called up, but I wasn’t sure what the exact impact was for the player. Thanks for the information
it was in the Wilpon era.
Who...?
I think they were Bernie Madoff's buddies, wonder what happened to them?
And for anyone that wants to know why its called "Super Two"...
To qualify for the Super Two designation, players must rank in the top 22 percent, in terms of service time, among those who have amassed between two and three years in the Majors.
It means he'll make $1-3M in 2021 instead of the league minimum.
It's good for Smith but makes the financial burden of using him as the backup 1B a bit rougher to swallow.
He'll always be #1 in my heart though...
He deserves it
Good for him. Uncle Steve will be happy to pay up.

Shouldn't Pete Alonzo also been granted Super 2? I feel like I am missing something.
I think it’s for players between 2 and 3 years of service time. Someone above gave a much better explanation as to how it works
No, Alonso has exactly 2 years of service time now. Super 2s are players with almost 3 yrs of time
That’s cool.
Message for the MLB Player’s Association:
Give the NL the DH
Let ownership have the option to void a player’s contract for the entire length of the deal after a 2nd positive PED test (162 game suspension).
Hmmmm both your suggestions heavily favor the Mets.....
Are there any biases in there?
No not at all hehe
The league and MLBPA need to see the light and come up with a list of banned substances and appropriately scaled penalties.
Steroids like the ones Cano took should be auto ban from baseball on the first offense. Waiting for the 3rd is absurd. Most PEDs should fall into this category. Something like Ephedra that's banned primarily for player safety should get some leniency on the first offense, but lifetime ban on the second.
It's been over 10 years since this policy has been implemented and we see that the owners aren't actually out to get players by spiking their Wheaties.
