Bit strange to sign him to one year when he did his ACL late 2020, meaning its very doubtful he'll be able to play, but I'm stoked to keep him around. His dreamtime debut was one of the highlights of Essendon's season this year. It definitely created a lot of buzz if you get what I mean.

I wonder too what the logic behind a one year deal is. My speculative thoughts;

  1. He has had issues with fitness before, so the club has probably told him that he needs to commit to rehab.

  2. ACL injuries put a player out for a year but can often take a while to get back up to speed - we may be consider rookie listing him in 2022 if that is the case.

  3. We want to see how he recovers. He has decent skills, but his main thing is his evasiveness and speed. It is generally hard to regain these after an ACL.

Nail on the head, particularly point 1.

Prove you’re committed and we’ll prove we’re committed. Good for both parties, a pretty professional and respectful arrangement.

Id also imagine thered be reason from his side as well. Likely he would not want to commit long term on a small payment considering he's starting to break into the 22.

Club wouldn't be offering much to a 4 gamer, he'd want to try convince them over the next year with his rehab to spend more on the next contract

4 . He's one his way out the door to Hawthorn.

Also there is the motivation factor, easier to commit to a re-hab when you know you have a year of football ahead of you when you return.

Just wait until he does it at half time when we’re getting spanked...

Thought we would've signed him to a 2 year deal considering he's done an ACL so might not play next year. Glad he's signed on though, he's such an exciting player

Not exactly a show of faith, is it? We’ve consistently signed on players to longer deals who’ve showed less potential at AFL than Mosquito did in his few games this year. With our dearth of small forward options you’d think we’d be more eager to retain him.

Maybe we’ve finally learned our lesson and aren’t committing long term to injured players? Having said that though, Mozzie’s debut was one of the highlights of my year and I hope we get another 8-10 years of him tearing it up.

Maybe that’s a part of it, or Covid financial realities. But how do the likes of Mutch, Cutler, Gleeson & Clark etc get gifted multi-year deals, and Mosquito, who’s had to over come a lot more than they have (injuries, studies during his first year + left his community to pursue a career) and had more impact than those players yet isn’t granted the same opportunity? His his injury more severe than they’re letting on, do they have another target who can play a similar role? We’ve carried a lot of plodders on the list, and he is one of the few with legitimate X-factor.

Yeah I hear you and completely agree, you’d have though Mozzie gets at least until 2022.

What happened if he signed with another club. Could he have signed with another club?

Very exciting player, look forward to seeing him play again once his rehab is done.

Can we have him back yet please?
