These "calls" are from one person on Twitter, expressing his opinion. The headline suggests there are angry mobs with pitchforks. The article even includes a discussion with the Indian Nation, saying they have a good relationship with the team, but one element was "unfortunate." I'm all for being culturally sensitive, but this article seems alittle overblown. Am I missing something here?

Headlines draw ad revenue especially headlines that are controversial or scandalous
Cool. That's what I thought. I prefer to have independent verification on whether I should be outraged or not. :-)
First off I can't figure out what the cultural appropriation part is unless it's some of the lines drawn on it???
but more importantly, cultures do not stand alone they're all built on previous cultures. Therefore no culture owns anything.

There is no reason for this to be posted other than to to just get people to feign outrage over “PC culture”
I'm pretty sure that "driving people to my shitty website through 'outrage'" is responsible for about 90% of all web traffic, not including porn and cat videos.
Idk I feel like a porno involving a cat would draw a lot of outrage
Will change mascot to stick figure man, no wait that's sexist.
What do you have against thin people?
Back to the hockey stick logo
I expected this to be a Beaverton story ... it wasn't.

Is there a way that Cultural Appropriation can ever be a good thing?
Seems like its always a bad thing but I dunno ... one culture liking something about another and then making it thier own to me sounds like the ultimate version of appreciation ...
prime example tempura in Japan... is it fair to say its just Portuguese food?

Can you define that difference? I can see the offense in "Redskins" or even "Indians", but the Canucks using an image of an Orca styled after native art seems more an homage than insult.
As colonial settlers, we are unable to see the damage caused by a non-indigenous artist honoring indigenous culture through art.
Cultural exchange ≠ cultural appropriation, in the same way that trade ≠ theft, in the same way that citation ≠ plagiarism, in the same way that sex ≠ rape, in the same way that employment ≠ enslavement...
so cannot Vancouver do something with the local native tribe and honor them or something to include as part of the history and learning about them? Can we not make Lemonade?
The canucks organization has lots of goodwill with local west coast native American tribes because of their philanthropy and recognition of the variety of native cultures.
You should probably read the article and realize that this complaint was made by some white professor in Manitoba.
The local native tribe has a very good relationship with the Canucks and they have no issue with the logo. Educate yourself.

ah okay I get it... Some dudder with post colonial guilt wants to "white wash" history so he stops eating too much ben and Jerry's.
Don’t be obtuse. That’s obviously not what i was saying. If you take something that’s not yours without permission, that’s morally blameworthy. If the local tribes themselves give the Canucks a logo of their own free will and in fair exchange for something of equal value, then of course that would be totally fine.
Alright so lets do that then instead of changing the logo.
They could just draw it more realistically. Pretty simple change.
I have no idea why you're getting downvoted when orcas live in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and a more realistic drawing would eliminate the "tribal totem" resemblance and solve the appropriation problem. I don't hear anybody flipping shit over bears, tigers, dolphins, ravens yadda yadda yadda...
🤷♂️ reddit, amirite?
Mmhm. And the fact hockey doesn't do as much business as the NFL and MLB I guess?
No, no. It must be drawn by an indigenous person or else it's stealing culture.
... by one guy on Twitter.
A white guy too.
Apparently the Chief of the supposedly "offended" Native Tribe said he has no problem with the logo.
So this really isn't an issue at all.
