FIRE and medicine?
Hey, guys. I'm graduating this upcoming spring with a Biology degree and was recently admitted to an MD program in a HCOL area. I have no debt from undergraduate due to scholarships and working.
After removing the rose-tinted glasses from my premed journey, and taking a step back to look objectively at my future; I've been thinking about not attending medical school. While the career seems highly impactful and interesting subject matter, it will be a long academic journey that eventually puts me in debt and not earning anything substantially above living expenses and student debt repayments until I'm nearly 30. Comparatively, my peers will be able to invest, purchase homes, and support family financials.
After reading up on the three FIRE subs, it seems like everyone says that medicine is a terrible path for FIRE potential and instead primarily pursue careers in tech (FAANG especially), high finance, and engineering.
Looking at it from a Machiavellian approach of a job is a means to an end, what would you do in a situation like mine? Is medical school still the best path? Would you learn to code and try to get a job without a comp sci degree, get an entry-level business job, and try to get an MBA, something else?
