Sooo, the Chosen were who, again?

XCOM2 was my introduction to this series and I haven’t had the pleasure of playing the original. I’ve heard there was a DLC that focused on three soldiers and they may have been captured and turned into the Chosen. Is that true?

Can someone please fill me in on the lore?

Much appreciated!
