Adopting war orphans from Iraq, Afg, Syria?

This Christmas, I can’t stop thinking of the children. None of them deserved to be children in a war zone. My wife and I have been thinking of this for a few years now. It’s been 4 years since I left the army and I’m now in a very stable place financially and support network wise - planted roots in California with some family nearby and a decent amount of new friends. We are ready for children and we really want to do some good in this messed up world. Has anyone done this before or considered it?
