Characters’ backstories

I noticed that all of the backstories that were shown of the players have one thing in common and it’s that they all used to be disgraceful in a way, most of them having problems with their parents, or being marginalized by society. Could that have a relation with the purpose of the game? Like why only people like these are the ones who get to be in this new reality
