When does your country start teaching history?

Here in the US history classes start in 1492 since that was the discovery of the Americas, but kind of skim over the Spanish conquests until Jamestown in 1607. While 400 years of history works for us since that basically covers our entire history, how does this work in countries that are much, much older than that? Starting British history with the English Civil War of 1647 for comparison's sake just seems off to me somehow.
