Collecting biomass in sandbox mode? Krastorio2

First time playing Krastorio2 but I always play in sandbox mode without an avatar (the little dude). I can't seem to collect the material to make the military research material, anyone know how I collect the initial bio mass needed to get to the research to be able to produce it?
