My Letter of Intent

Hello everyone,

Last time, I posted advice for what to do to get off the waitlist and one of the tips was to write a letter of intent. Today I would like to share with you my very own letter of intent that I believe helped me get in.

I had applied to this school, which was my top choice, with a lower GPA of 3.2 and 23AA. I had a pre-December interview, but on acceptance day I was waitlisted, and the interviewer had noted that my GPA was low so I believe that was the reason for my waitlist. The first thing I did was send a letter of intent. After like two months, and another 2-3 very short and brief updates about me, I was accepted off the waitlist.

Now keep in mind that a letter of intent should probably be personal. Some of the below were kind of nice words, but most of it was true for me. You need to find a way to find a way to make it personal for you. I suggest checking out my previous post for letter of intent tips. Also, keep in mind that I do not think this is an extremely well written letter of intent or what not. Style of writing may not be to your liking, but it is sincere, and written to show who I am. Hopefully this will help everyone who is on a waitlist and are thinking about writing a letter of intent.

The below is a word for word edition of my letter of intent with the names and institutions changed of course.

Dear Admissions Team,

My name is John Depp, and I would like to thank you once again for the opportunity to interview at Kingston University School of Dentistry. I sincerely appreciate being put on the wait list, and would like to reiterate my strong desire to attend KU because I believe it offers the best dental education in the country.

My interest for Kingston University began when I first witnessed the expertise of KU professionals in treating my parents’ illnesses. The excellent treatment and successful outcomes left me in no doubt that KU produces exceptional clinicians. Kingston University School of Dentistry would, without a doubt, enable me to replicate these high professional standards and realize my dream to become a great dentist. After learning more about KU, I was awed by the passing rates in the National Board Dental Examination and the abundant opportunities available to students for dental outreach. The location of Kingston University School of Dentistry also means I would be able to study while monitoring the well-being of my parents. With these strong incentives in mind, I believe KU is the perfect fit for a student like me.

On the day of the interview, I was honored to have Dr. Will Smith and Avril Lavigne interview me and answer my inquiries about KU, and had the pleasure of being on a tour led by current D2 students, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Carrey. Thanks to everyone, I was able to learn that KU has extensive research opportunities beginning even at D0. I was amazed by the facilities and extensive opportunities for research. As I would also like to participate in research, being able to see facilities such as the endodontic research facility and hearing about Arnold’s research experience on topics such as root orifice locations of mandibular molars further fueled my interest in the Kingston University School of Dentistry. The interview and tour at KU strongly reaffirmed my desire to attend, and I hope to be able to contribute to the Kingston University dental fraternity by conducting innovative research.

I will continue to work hard to strengthen my application. Currently, I am enrolled in a high-level special topics biology class titled “Mitochondrial impairment.” The course involves exploring the relationship between neurodegenerative diseases and mitochondrial impairment by reviewing various research studies. The course teaches students how to critically read and understand research studies, and exposes them to common research techniques. This course would be very rewarding for students like me, who are interested to conducting in-depth research. I have also continued to shadow Dr. Emma Watson to increase my understanding of dental procedures. Along with my academics and continued shadowing experience, I am also working full time at the dental department of the non-profit Daniel Radcliffe Community Health Center. I will again be organizing the ADA sponsored “Give Kids a Smile” event at our health center as well as a multitude of other dental outreach events to spread dental awareness. In fact, in the past few months, I have completed several outreach events to educate children how to brush and floss at pre-schools and to educate the elderly on the benefits of dentures at community senior centers. Educating patients about oral hygiene is deeply fulfilling, and I look forward to continuing my efforts in the future.

For the reasons noted above, I regard the Kingston University School of Dentistry as the ideal dental school for me, and am confident I will be able to contribute to the faculty with my interest in research. I encourage the admissions team to continue to consider my application for acceptance. I look forward to being in continued contact with you regarding updates in my application. Once again, I would like to thank you for considering my application.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email at Johndepp@gmail.com or via phone at (800)-888-8888.

Sincerely,

John Depp
