Cost of living / standard of living in Weimar Germany

Hello, to keep this brief my husband and I and our son currently live in China. My husband has been offered a job in Germany. The pay is only 42,000USD a year...so roughly 35,000 euros a year. Rent is not included and I understand there is an almost 40% wage tax in Germany. I don’t teach so I would be home with my son full time. I’ve heard conflicting opinions on if we could make that salary work. We are quite frugal but we also do enjoy the occasional nice meal out. Anyone here live in Weimar or familiar with the cost of living there?
