Cost-effective way of filling in 3D prints for added weight?

Question

Hi guys,

I was wondering what the cheapest way of filling a hollow 3d print is. I'm planning on making a chess set, and the pieces need some weight. Filling in the pieces 100% with infill would give me just about enough weight, but it's a lot of material and I'm sure there is something that would be more cost-effective.

I tried sand and it was awkward & not really possible to get the weight you want, because if you fill it 3/4 full then you get rattling sounds.

I looked at steel bb's and it comes out at around the same price if I was to just use infill, and you'd also need to do something to stop the rattling.

I was wondering if there is maybe a more cost-effective & simpler way to do this? I'm confident using 3D software to edit the model for particular uses.

Thank you in advance!
