Alternative View: The Republican party is in Excellent Shape
Here is an outline as to why I think the Republican party is in excellent shape to win and maintain power in the future despite the 2020 losses.
-
Trump has repeatedly shown that republicans only need to win between 45% and 46% for the presidential election to be a tossup. Negative partisanship virtually guarantees this so by default, at minimum, Republicans will be at a 50% chance to win. Even running someone with minimum competency to get to 48% and a republican is guaranteed a Electoral College blowout.
-
Republicans never need to win the popular vote either at the presidential level or to maintain control of statehouses due to gerrymandering. They can maintain power from a purely minoritarian coalition.
-
There are more rural states than urban states and this disparity is increasing, not decreasing. More often than not Republicans will control the Senate and Supreme court no matter how unpopular Republicans or Republican policies get. Their Senate control is completely divorced from policy outcomes.
-
Trump has shown that you will get full party support no matter what as long as you have an (R) next to your name. You could literally try to overthrow the government and still maintain 90% of your party support. This means just running republicans across the country with such a high floor of support you will maintain lots of power no matter what you do.
