Original Switch has no sound while undocked???

Question

I have an odd problem with my original Switch that I haven't seen many other posts about or fixes for.

When docked, everything works as it should. Once I undock though, the sound becomes disabled. It has happened at least three times now. Nothing I try fixes the issue so I dock the Switch and leave it for months at a time. Occasionally, if I go to try it out undocked, sound will be restored! In the past the sound has worked for weeks before dying again.

So tonight, having not played any Switch for 3 or 4 months, I grab it off the dock and THERE'S SOUND. It prompted for an update and I suspected that once it restarted the sound would be gone. I navigated the menu for a few minutes and played with volume controls and I can confirm that the speakers both work well. Sure enough, once I updated and restarted the sound was disabled again.

I've done all standard factory resets that I can access and cleared any and all data the OS will let me clear. The speaker icon responds to volume control and headphone jack activity and it is functioning as if the sound works as normal (even though it produces no sound). The audio/sound/mute/headphone menu settings are all set properly.

I'm at a loss. It's crazy frustrating. At least when I do play, it's mostly docked. I'd like to be able to take the Switch on vacation though and that's currently a no go.

Anyone here of this issue before? Thanks for taking the time. Cheers.

TLDR, whatever mechanism (firmware?) that routes the sound to the Switch speakers when undocked, is not enabling the speakers. Speaker icon reflects working audio, but no sound present. Speakers confirmed working still.

Sounds to me like the headphone jack is dirty and thinks there is a cable plugged into it.

See if headphones work...,if so....

Try gently inserting and removing a headphone plug several times. Wiggle and spin it a bit.

It detects headphones going in and out. I can see this reflected in the speaker icon. I've cleaned the port tried plugging/unplugging repeatedly. Gonna give Nintendo a call.

Do you have a sound bar hooked up?

My Switch will not have sound when I dock it. I have to go into the menu of my Switch and change the sound setting to a different setting, then back to surround sound (I have a sound bar), and it fixes it every time.

The problem is when it is undocked only.

I'm sorry, I completely read it wrong

Are you using an HDMI cable, and if so have you tried replacing that with another to see if that's the issue?

Or if you have a friend who can lend another dock to test and see if it's an issue with the dock?

It works as it should when docked.

Whoops, sorry I mis-read that entirely then! I had it mixed up as only working when NOT docked.

I hope you're able to get it solved then... good luck!

Sounds exactly like what you should tell Nintendo support when you call them. Or if you're feeling adventurous, open it up and see if you can spot any loose connections - recommend watching a video first if you're not familiar.

Yeah, this is pretty much where I'm at.

Mines done this for the past year. Did you have any luck with this?

Nah man. The local game shop looked at it and passed on trying to fix it. Nothing they were used to seeing. I keep meaning to get on the phone with Nintendo. If I send it in and they can't fix it, am I just SOL? It's killed my faith in Nintendo. I'm over it. Good with my PC and PS5.

You will be out of pocket if its out of warranty. I remember reading about the issue ages ago. I think its not so uncommon.
