Looks fantastic.

  • 26 GPIO
  • Plenty of PWM for RGB
  • 2MB memory
  • USB host or device capability
  • I2C for splits
  • Less than $10

Checks all the boxes... Except the micro USB connector. Those screw holes might be useful to tie a reinforcing wire around.

Not something I know a huge amount about, would it be possible to take off the micro port and solder on a USB C port? I know it would be a lot of work but is it possible?

Nope. Footprints don't match. A usb-micro to usb-c adapter board would be possible though :)

WeAct Studio's MiniF4 "Black Pill" has USB-C, and is about the same size and price. It's a bit slower, and not as much memory (84Mhz, 96kb ram, 512kb flash space). It can similarly be used with micropython.

For keyboard firmware.. for comparison, pro micros have 28kb of flash space.

Looks like it won't be necessary... They've licenced the chip to Adafruit who's designed a pair of pro-micro sized variants with usb-C!

Adafruit offers the new silicon in feather format, which has a type-C port.

Probably the most important factor with choosing a controller is firmware support.

And once this RPi silicon is supported, it will dominate. The foundation is highly reliable and respected. Soon we'll be printing our own JLCPCBs with these already on them.

It's a fair step bigger than the micro, at 51mm x 21mm vs 35 x 18mm for a micro. That's about 1u longer, bit smaller.

Spark fun got you covered as usual for older pro micro footprints
