There is no THEY vs US! There is only US!
I have been collecting a lot of feedback for my climate change project in the last few weeks and most can be split into two categories:
- People who like the app and want to use it
- People that believe that individuals can not do anything about it and is up to governments and companies
(btw I did not find anyone, yet, claiming that global warming is fake, which is actually really positive XD)
Here are my thoughts on the matter:
Companies explore our natural resources to produce products for us, the people. We need roads, food, internet, houses, shampoos, coffee, fuel, etc... and they provide it for a price that we (or some of us) can afford.
The problem is that humans are selfish, we think about our needs first. If we have two different brands of the same exact shampoo one much cheaper than the other, we will buy the cheaper one, without questioning ourselves why is it cheaper?
We, the same people that buy the cheaper shampoo, work in these companies or governments.
I don't know about you, but I have been working in a big tech company where our goal is to extract the maximum clicks from a user, without even thinking if that is good for them/world or not.
What I am trying to say is that we should not wait for the companies or governments to apply these rules or changes because we are them!
It's time for us to start understanding that our comfort comes with an environmental cost and understanding what are the repercussions of the comfortable life we live (talking mostly about the developed countries).
It turns out that there is already a lot of adjustments that we can do in our lives to become more sustainable but they are somehow lost in translation.
My goal with Changeit is to compile all this information in an easy to read and act manner.
I really believe that by changing our individual mindset we will be able to change the market needs which will lead to more environmentally aware politicians and companies.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the topic? Can individuals make a difference?
