Is Alchemy worth having if you don't raid or do mythic+?

Professions

I've been trying to find a second profession for my rogue and a lot of people recommend Alchemy for the 2 hour flasks. The only issue is that I never really use flasks because I don't raid and rarely do mythic (which should be finished within an hour anyway) so I feel like that Alchemy-specific benefit doesn't offer me a lot. My other profession is Engineering so I'm not saving much money on herbs either by gathering them myself.

So, is it worth it or should I pick something else?

Alchemy is great... with herbalism. Don’t pick engineering and alchemy. Pick mining instead

I have mained an alchemist since legion. I do raid and do a decent amount of m+ but the 2 hour time limit really is great, sometimes you can run 3 keys on that one flask. Being able to make healing pots for all my alts is awesome. I do have pretty much every profession covered on my alts but alchemy stuff is the only stuff I find I would need to buy on AH. In summary I think it’s not bad to main an alchemist

Can I ask whether you farm your own herbs or buy them? Do you save much money if you buy herbs vs. just buying the pots outright?

There isn’t much margin on herbalism stuff unless you farm it yourself. I very rarely buy herbs - just if I get lazy. I almost always stop to grab herbs while doing dailies and I also have the thing on from Theotar my soulbind that gives me herbs sometimes (luckily he is the best soulbind for my spec/class)

Thanks for the info!

I don't raid either but I like having shadow oil(?) on my toons to help a bit with dps. Also the healing pots are nice on toons that don't self heal (like rogues). Flasks are useful in Torghast, or they sell ok.

Oh I hadn't considered Torghast, good point. The weapon oil as well I could see being very useful.

Really? You going to bring politics into a game sub for helping people. Regardless of the fact that you're wrong, I won't stoop to your level. Get a life man, you are pathetic.

It's definitely lucrative to say the very least. Although you may not use those flasks because you don't raid, others do, and will pay ya for it.

I would suggest just taking something which can get you a bit of money (skinning, herbalism, etc)

Speaking as a maxed out Alchemist, in my server, the flasks are going for 14g. Where as the herbs range from 7-100g (death blossom-widowbloom)

You may as well buy the flasks you are looking for and spend your profession on other stuff that could actually make you some money.

14g for flasks?? They are like 700g on mine wtf

3
caithteOP•

Seriously 14g? How come people say flasks are such a big cost for raiding then?

Disregard my previous comment. I was looking at the oils not flasks. Flasks get decent money

I am on Kelthuzad realm, and it seems like there are way too many able potion makers, but we are all lazy to gather our own herbs!

Your milage may vary though based on the population on your realm. Download auctionator to help gauge what type of margins you might be looking at

If tou don't do much PvE, Alchemy is only mainly good for money making.

Even then on my server at least, everything you make with alchemy costs the same as the materials you gather, so selling herbs on the AH yields the same amount of gold. And they sell faster than pots or flasks.

If you go for the transmute, forgot the name, that you get from the Ravendreth faction, also forgot the name, that sells for a few thousand gold, it's pretty much the only thing alchemy can do to make more money than straight up selling herbs.

Sadly the alchemist stone is useless this expansion since you can't craft a high ilvl one and crafter's mark can't do that either.

If you want to make money, stick with herbalism (or just pair a secondary profession with a primary one that you can find use for yourself and also make money from them). If you do not actively PvE (m+ / raiding) Alchemy is useless for you.

Can be useful in unranked pvp, or if you want speed boosts and such when out in the world, but that's oretty much it.

I'd stick with engineering and mining if you mainly pvp. Can also get decent gold from mining.

Yeah I've got mining at the moment and it's treated me well so far. Thanks for the answer, lots of great information there.
