I’m a name nerd in the hospital with my newborn and unable to name her

Baby Names

My husband and I had narrowed it down to 4 names (Shira, Sadie, Alma, and Sivan) and thought once we met our baby we would know. Well now that we’ve met her we still can’t decide, and have basically found a reason to dislike all four names. We’re discharged tomorrow and are at a loss - now DH is bringing up other names we’ve ruled out in the past and throwing out new options, and I’ve just given up. DH is Israeli, I’m from the US and we live in the US. Half our family is in Israel, and we spend a lot of time there and could live there again in the future. Here’s our issues:

  • Shira and Sivan - DH says they’re not international enough and daughter will be stuck constantly repeating/correcting her name in the US like he does did his name.

  • Sadie - too strange in Israel, same problem as above but opposite.

  • Alma - I’m worried it’s too old fashioned of a name, and that she’ll get nicknamed Al/Allie which I don’t like.

We’ve gone through and ruled out so many names at this point, I’m exhausted. Don’t even get me started on a middle name - she’ll probably just get my maiden name at this point because I’m too tired to think of something else. I can’t believe this is happening when I’ve loved names forever.

Happy to get input or just to vent!

Update: thank you all so much for taking the time to respond! I read all the responses to my husband, and they were incredibly helpful. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to respond directly to all of them but it’s been newborn hospital craziness around here. We’ve decided to go with Shira :) Thank you all again for the incredible input!
