what armour should i use

i have no idea about armour in this game the only thing i do is wear one exotic and for everything else whatever is highest power levels, and i also look for things that charge my super faster, but are there any legendaires that are better and i should farm. bec i keep changing gear and i want a gear set that is really good and i can stick with, so waht is good legendary gear. And also why does everybodies characters look cool but mine looks like dogshit
