Newbie Navy Help

Question

So I've finally decided to try and learn HoI4 for real after I dropped it years ago when it originally came out, because I know if I can get my head around it it's a game I'd enjoy. I even bought all the DLC to further incentivise myself and learn all of the new mechanics and things. Anyway, I'm playing a game as Germany and it's essentially been a stalemate at the Italian-French border and a stalemate deep in the Netherlands territory. It's been about a year and a half and there's barely been movement as neither of us can break through as the allies had time to stack the line and Italy was too busy trying to beat Yugoslavia to help.

I identified one problem being I went too big too early with my divisions, not realising how much war a massive war would kick my ass resource wise. But one problem I don't know how to solve is the navy. My neighbour got smoked, the amount of men in the field got halved because I did that bad of a job. How should I be structuring my navies ships wise, what should I be building, can I even defend my trade convoys as Germany or is the Royal Navy just gonna be too strong? And something I'm not sure on, does the game order different types of ships into different categories individually and I have to go through them all if I want to move them back to a port? Because I thought if I just clicked on a navy they should all go together like other units but in this they don't? Or am I wrong? I could very well be wrong, I'm essentially a chimp who has found his way into driving a car.

Edit: Also, if this is important or not, how many armour divisions should I build in relation to how many infantry divs I have? 1 armour for every 2 div? More or less?

Definitely less armour. If you focus on your navy and build dock yards you can compete against the Royal Navy. It will take lots of resources though. I'm a bit confused on your question on how to order different ships into different categories. The game starts with different navy groups like you have with armies. You should have multiple so they can be on different tasks. It's a bit different to move them though. You have to press the select all after pressing on the navy army you want. Or you can select the different groups of navy you want and then right click them on a port to move them. I hope this helps.

That answers my question pretty much haha. Essentially the way I was playing I thought just clicking on the admiral card would select his entire fleet and they would all do the same thing, but looks like I was missing that bit about select all, so I will have to keep an eye out for that. So essentially I thought my navy was going to port for repair when in actuality they were still hanging out in the channel getting slapped around because some were still stuck on the old order. Thank you for the help.
