Question on B1/B2 I-94

Hi everyone! I was wondering if there are any knowledgeable people here that could help with my query. I’m pregnant and due in a few months; my mom would like to come help us out during the first few weeks with the baby. She lives on the border, so this would generally be a non-issue. However, since land crossings are closed for nonessential travel she will have to travel by air, turning what is usually a one hour plane trip into an 8hour ordeal. I don’t mind arranging this, but I’m a little worried about the exit record for her I-94. On the way back it would be easiest to travel within the US and do a land crossing back to Mexico (e.g. San Diego to Tijuana). Is there any issue to this approach? Would I have to book her another 8 hour trip back through air in Mexico so she can hand it in?

You don't necessarily have to return through air.

You can return the paper I-94 through mail or similar.

Thanks! I’ve only seen paper I-94s as my family has needed them through land before, but I understand that if entering through air she might get an electronic record. Would she need to go through the ordeal of mailing her proof of return through other means as in the article you’ve linked?

If she does not depart through commercial air travel, esp through the Southern border, yes.
