Finally bought my first diver. After many weeks of consideration I bought a Certina DS PH200M. Very happy about the purchase. It offerss everything I was looking for and the looks to top it off. The value for money is incredible. For around 800 EURO (sub $1000 at current exchange rate) you get:

- a Swiss diver from a company founded in 1888

- POWERMATIC 80.611 automatic movement with 80 hours of power reserve and Nivachron tech which significantly reduces the effects of magnetic fields on the watch.

- 120 clicks ceramic bezel

- 200 meter water resistance

- Sapphire crystal with AR treatment on the underside

- Sapphire crystal case-back

- Super-LumiNova applied to all indices, hands and on the 12 hour mark on the bezel

- date window

- Certina DS concept - the manufacturer claims the watch is exceptionally resistant to impacts (still a mechanical watch, so I am not going to test that) and a gasket inside the crown and a gasket around the winding stem guarantee the water resistance of the watch even when the crown is pulled out (also not going to test that but good to know)

Looks awesome. I have never seen one of these before. Kind of reminds me of the Sinn 104...in a good way! :)

Thanks! Sinn 104 was one of the watches I was looking at but decided to grab this one first since I think it will be a limited production run. I believe the 104 will be more readily available in the 2nd hand market and that Sinn won’t discontinue the model anytime soon.

Very nice, but your next watch better come with a spell check ♥️

I'm still just unsure of the logos on the dial. I think this could honestly be a perfect watch if it was just a bit cleaner and a little less industrial sounding of a name.

It's an amazing watch though I was looking at the same model for a while! Good pick!

Congratulations, I hope you enjoy this!

This one's been on my radar for a few months, have to say I'm not really familiar with Certina. I'm a big fan of the design of this watch, particularly the handset and the dial - just love the gold crosshairs. My only gripe is that the bezel is perhaps a little busy.

So clean looking

This is super interesting/ it appears very similar to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms

Certina is an interesting company, know someone with a quartz movement

Something about that bezel is really doing it for me. Very beautiful find!

Nice looking.is it quartz or mechanical watch?

1
Joke_ChokeOP•

Mechanical. It has both automatic and hand winding

Are the bezel marks "aged-lume" in color? I really like it, but wish the indices on the dial were in the same shade. Dope diver, either way, OP. You should post a lume-shot! :)

1
Joke_ChokeOP•

no idea how to take a proper lume shot but here is a quick one

The bezel marks are golden colored and every single one is indented so it should not flake off (I hope)

Awesome watch!

I have a Certina Multi 8 and really like it. Muhammad Ali was a brand ambassador for them I think.

Certina is vastly underrated here. Your PH200M is a looker!

Good looking watch - nice grab

Swatch Group owns the Certina brand now, so forget about the history going back to 1888. It's not the same company, in the same way that Hamilton is not the same legendary American-made watch brand that it once was.

How strong is the lume, relative to a Seiko? That would be my only concern. Otherwise, looks solid. Would have preferred the older 4 Hz ETA movement, though...

Nice watch, overall. Great aesthetic.

I do not own a lumed Seiko right now so I cannot post a side by side comparison. I would say the initial output of Seikos lumibrite is stronger but longetivity is the same. I do not charge the watch before going to sleep but it is very very readable throughout the night.

Don't get me wrong. I've got a DS Podium that I adore, and have been eying Jomashop for another DS model lately, because Certina is just too good to pass up. Still, despite having their own twist with the additional gaskets, and whatever else may make it more durable, it's still a Swatch Group product...which is not necessarily a bad thing. I love the fact that I got an ETA 2824, sapphire, excellent finishing, applied indices with BGW9 lume, and a half-decent bracelet...for less than $300.

It's so underrated, it's almost criminal. But, hey, more for us...

Why do people dislike the swatch group

2
shiny_bobblehead•

It's not that there's anything inherently bad about swatch group, it's just that when you're part of such a large conglomerate, you may have limited, if any, freedom to make your own decisions, so the watches end up sharing a similar design language across brands, and tend to have lost a bit of their uniqueness and individual brand identity.

There are lots of homages now, from Hamilton, to Certina, to Longines...as Swatch Group tries to ride the current trend of rehashing successful designs from yesteryear, by raiding the back catalogs of these illustrious brands, from when they were actually doing their own thing.

It's the same reason that you see so many oddly-placed date windows on a lot of these homages, even though they can throw off the symmetry of the original design, and make the entire dial look "off"...because they want to sell more watches, and more customers happen to prefer having a date window, than not.

At least they give you a solid ETA movement, although I'm not so sure about the newer 3 Hz movements...

In reality, most of these brands wouldn't have survived the quartz crisis otherwise, so at least through Swatch Group they get to continue their existence in some form, if perhaps mostly just their name.

And swatch saved the swiss

The new designs pay homage to the vintage styles. They're not the same watches, they just happen to look like them to varying extents.

Being owned my Swatch means nothing. That’s like tagging on the engineering marvels that Porsches are because they’re owned by Volkswagen group.

1
shiny_bobblehead•

Where's the Certina factory, btw? It's not the same company it used to be. It shares office space with Tissot and Mido in Le Locle. It's not like Omega, with their own state of the art manufacturing facilities. I'd venture that there is a fair amount of parts sharing between brands, so what actually makes any of the brands all that unique?

It's different from what Invicta has done with Glycine, to buy them, but let them do their thing. Swatch just bought the names of mostly dead companies, and then made their own decisions about what those brands would look like.
