MAJOR Farmacy Mystery Box disappointment 😒😳

Spoiler

Here's the 7 piece mystery box that came with a $250 purchase! They're now claiming it was so popular they're adding the option to buy the box outright at $115. I'll list the contents down below and my feelings about the box. I believe all mystery boxes are the same as I got 2 identical boxes and the description makes no mention of variation.

Green House Value set - $48 (1 full size Green Clean, 1 mini Cheer Up cherry eye cream, 1 mini Daily Greens moisturizer)

Honey Drop Moisturizer - $45 (full size)

Very Cherry Bright serum - $62 (or $46.50 with subscribe and save on the farmacy website which can be canceled for free after purchase) (full size)

1 Hydrating Coconut sheet mask - $6 ($5.40 with subscribe and save) (full size)

1 Brightening Coconut sheet mask - $6 ($5.40 with subscribe and save) (full size)

Canvas Bag - No retail price given

Total retail value: $167 if purchasing full price. Total retail value if using the easily cancelable subscribe and save options $140.30. Use the text or new email discount code anyone can easily get for 15% off and you're down to $141.95 and $119.25 respectively. So surprise! At the current $115 price for the mystery box alone, they just sold you 7 items for $4.25 less than just buying them all outright on the site. And the mystery box likely has stuff you would not have ordered otherwise, so you possibly just paid more than ordering what you wanted directly from the site. And for suckers like me, i wasted gobs of money on full priced retail stuff i bought solely for this mystery box that I personally do not like. Well played Farmacy, but you've now lost a customer for any future mystery boxes.

Also, I guess they're saying that canvas bag is worth $33?

Final Words: Buy at your own risk. They sent almost all items they stuff in cheap beauty boxes. They counted 2 sheet masks as 2 full sized items. The full, current selling prices on the site for all 7 items clearly doesn't come close to the $200 minimum they claim. And all of this will be even less than $115 at the holidays/black Friday. If you follow the math, they're essentially selling these 7 items for almost their exact current selling price on the website with the email and subscribe and save discount.

Yeah, we were roasting this offer a little over on r/muaonthecheap the other day, lol. $250 is a ridiculous buy-in amount, especially for a brand with such a limited product range. It's easy to get excited by this stuff though and it happens to the best of us.

Do you know what their return policy would be on a GWP like this? I'm wondering if they would deduct the value of the mystery bag from your return or insist on you sending the mystery bag back?

fsbbemOP•

If they would take it back I'd gladly send it all back. There are like 3 farmacy products i absolutely love and thought I'd get at least 1 in the gwp. Nope.

Edit...thats where I found this offer. I actually posted this same post as a warning this bag is a dud because I know we all jump on deals so fast over there, but the mods immediately removed it for violating rule #4. Oh well, hope some people see it over here.

Someone had already figured out what the contents were, I think a couple days ago I saw it posted there. Yeah, instead of creating a separate thread over there, they'll want you to post a comment on the existing thread. Very strict on the rules, lol

7
fsbbemOP•

I think i recall that! I believe someone guessed using extensive logical deduction since they only sell like 10 things lol, but it wasn't actually confirmed. The gwp was active on tues and wed, and i ordered on tues. Oh well, sometimes you win sometimes you lose. This one is an L for sure haha, but maybe one person who was going to buy it at $115 will see this and save their money 😂

I posted that offer on muaonthecheap and now I feel like an asshole because my expectations for this offer were super high but alas, I was so wrong. I was blinded by my love for Farmacy. Once I get mine I think I’m going to email them to say that this was super disappointing but I doubt they’ll do anything to fix it.

7
nievesur•

Yeah, I will say though, pay attention to the general consensus on that sub- especially from the long-timers there. Once you've been dealing hunting so long, you've seen it all come and go before and you develop a sharp instinct and you know a good deal when you see one. If the ones who've been around a bit are roasting a deal like that or saying they're not jumping in on it- there's usually a good reason 😊

SHEET MASKS ARE NOT FULL SIZE ITEMS

I don’t care if they’re sold individually for $65 a piece I don’t think a single use item should ever count as full size

28
fsbbemOP•

Right? Like a pack of 5 maybe counts as a FS item, but a single? What a clown ass move 🤡🤣

15
courtanayyyy•

Agreed! I’d consider a set of 5 a full size item, but definitely not a single mask.

And for suckers like me, i wasted gobs of money on full priced retail stuff i bought solely for this mystery box that I personally do not like.

So let me get this straight cause I think I'm misunderstanding... you made two $250 purchases (so $500 in total) from Farmacy of products you neither wanted or liked just to get 2 mystery boxes? That's a pretty terrible gamble. I don't know your income situation but $250, much less $500, is a lot of money to spend to bank on mystery items from a company whose products you don't even seem to like the majority of...?

While I agree that sheet masks should not count as full size especially in a mystery box touting such a high dollar value, at the same time that is indeed the game that one plays with mystery boxes. Also, at the end of the day it is coming from a for-profit company, so they're not going to offer any deals that would keep them from making a significant profit. In my experience, GWPs are rarely - if ever - worth a purchase you weren't reasonably going to make any way. To put that cost into perspective, $250 is the full annual cost of Allure, and it's also slightly under the full annual cost of base Boxycharm. So for a little over $500 you could have all the products you would receive from both of those subscriptions for an entire year!

I'm a single person with no kids and no debt. Disposable income isn't an issue, of course id never spend money i didnt have to blow. I have boxy, and allure, and almost all the monthly boxes. Im 50/50 on them and in fact am letting a couple subscriptions lapse when their year is up in march/April because I'm tired of them.

I'll say this about farmacy in beauty boxes. I dont trust most of it. I like boxy and will keep base and premium going, but I absolutely do not like that all their farmacy products are "made exclusively for boxycharm". Its not the same stuff you get directly from the company. Its usually made at a different location and the ingredients are slightly different and manufacturing is subjected to less rigorous standards. Same goes for other high end brands in those boxes like 111skin, elemis, etc...

In my experience the opposite has been true for high value gwps. Companies like ulta, cult beauty, QVC roll out some phenomenal gwps often at super reasonable buy in amounts. The $250 entry level at Faramacy is what made me think this would be worth it. Markups in the beauty industry are huge, and the profit margins on upscale beauty products in particular are outlandish, some of the highest across all industries. So even giving away a gwp double the value of this one, they'd still be making money hand over fist. My guess is the gwp was a way to generate sales while clearing out last years leftover stock.

ETA: I bought the products I regularly pan and use almost every day. The "i dont like" part, is me saying i dont like the gwp mystery box. Of course I like the products I purchased.

Well I've never shopped at Cult Beauty so I can't speak to that, but as you said yourself both Ulta and QVC offer several great GWPs with much more reasonable buy-in prices. The operative section here of course being how much more cost-effective these GWPs are both to the cost reached to receive them and to the actual value of items received. Not to mention since they are also part of a larger shopping entity there are a lot more products you can buy from to reach that lower buy-in price that are going to be products you actually want and you will use. Furthermore, they are usually very transparent ahead of time with what you are getting even further solidifying if they are worth the initial buy-in cost. Don't misunderstand and think I'm against GWPs as a whole and think they have no value. I love a good GWP. I just don't think many of them would be worth it if you had to spend significantly more money to get them then what you were intending to spend already - especially if it was going to be on stuff you didn't even really want to buy.

As to the subject of the marked up cost of the beauty industry, that is a commonly known issue. As with most things in life, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Meaning in this context that the closest production cost to consumer cost would lie within the median product cost. Products that have astronomical upfront costs are almost never an equivalent degree better then similar products at a more reasonable price. By this same logic, the higher the upfront product cost is the higher the profit margin is from the production cost to an exponential degree. The main reason these companies can charge that much more though is this false illusion of exclusivity, superiority, decadence, and status despite the true value of the product based on its ingredients. I'd argue offering huge deals on these "prestige"/"designer" products would only hurt the image of these companies and devalue the products themselves in the eyes of the kind of clientele they are marketed towards. This being true even if they are still maintaining a humongous profit margin, because again part of their appeal is this false narrative expertly generated by their marketing team of status and exclusivity due to the cost restrictions of purchasing these products.

I do see a lot of companies use both mystery bags and GWPs to get rid of old low selling stock too, so to me that is nothing new. That seems to be a large portion of Boxycharm sales at this point. As for the discrepentcy of ingredients and production that sometimes occurs with sub box products, I actually don't really take much issue with that in some cases. I don't like companies being made out of thin air with random alliexpress products just existing one day and trying to masquerade as this exclusive designer company with unrealistic prices. However, a few over-priced ingredient and expensive container swaps don't really both me all that much. As long as the product remains mostly the same and keeps important beneficial ingredients then I don't really mind. I think of it kind of like a generic version of that product. It's virtually the same, but at a much, much more realistic cost.

I think this went a little off the rails. Yes, you are correct that this one was not worth it. Im going to leave that at that for right now.

Your thoughts on cost are true to a point, but i think a couple other points got tangled up a bit.

Meaning in this context that the closest production cost to consumer cost would lie within the median product cost.

What? I think you're talking about average cost or maybe cost per unit, not median. The median is just the middle value in a range of data. But even so, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters to us is the consumer price point. And typically the highest costs getting to market are advertising and R&D, meaning beyond profit, consumers are paying for those production costs the most when buying a product.

Im aware beauty markups are commonly understood. I brought it up because your original point was that farmacy is a for profit company that needs to make money and won't offer gwps that impact their profit margin. My response was, margins are so wide they would still make a large profit even if the doubled the value of the gwp.

Products that have astronomical upfront costs are almost never an equivalent degree better then similar products at a more reasonable price.

I think you mean products with astronomical upfront prices (as upfront costs are the burden of the company). And if you did mean price, you're absolutely right. Scientists and dermatologists have reviewed ingredients and found once you reach a certain price point they're largely the same. Some expensive brands can even have lower quality ingredients than their lower priced peers but charge a lot based on their label. They've also admitted there's a ceiling on how far a beauty product can take you. Theres only so much a serum or cream can do, and charging hundreds of dollars for your best formula isn't going to raise that ceiling. Yet there's a huge market because people (like me) will blindly get spendy in our pursuits of beauty and perceived value. For the money a lot of us throw away we'd likely be better off looking into medical or surgical options. But I don't want to do that, so I keep slathering my face in insane marked up goos just hoping they'll be a miracle.

I disagree that high value gwps diminish upscale brands. If anything, from a marketing perspective, the high buy in gwps solidifies the status of the brand and its clientelle. Not many brands can get people to part with $250 or more. La Prarie, la mer, heck even stores like Nordstrom/Bloomingdale's will offer gwps "worth" hundreds of dollars. Of course you need to spend about 400-1000 to receive it. No one would argue that diminishes their brand. My opinion is that being included in a discount beauty box is a much larger hit to public image. Its the PR equivalent to haute designers partnering with target or designer labels showing up at TJ maxx (both rad phenomenons that I still scoop up though). But companies gain a lot of exposure (and sometimes cash) from doing so, so its worth it to them.

High end gwps and boxy aren't the same concept. The founder of boxy started his career as a liquidator/wholesale reseller so boxy has always been about selling overstock. As they gained brand recognition they now have more legitimate partnerships beyond just repackaging overstock, but I still don't trust a lot of their skincare. I did at first, but after looking into it...nope. The formulations aren't the same, thats why. Often times its the high quality, more expensively sourced ingredients that are left out completely. And when thats the case its not a generic version, it's simply not the same product. I prefer beauty boxes more for makeup or if it is skin care, from a smaller or indie brands. You're more likely to get the real stuff. Completely agree about fake product lines (everything under the DLS umbrella like kab, luna, faccia, bang beauty, etc...) Ipsy thankfully agreed to end partnerships with those brands. But boxy and glossybox and a few others still sell them. So I cancelled glossybox and am keeping an eye on my boxy subscriptions. 👀

Agreed! I can’t stand the “made exclusive for BoxyCharm” items that are manufactured in different countries or have different ingredients compared to the product you’d buy directly from them or at Sephora.

7
fsbbemOP•

Yessssss...the country of origin makes a huge difference, unfortunately. If people saw where some of this stuff was being made and the conditions of the site/workers there's no way they'd slather this stuff all over their face. Health and sanitation standards are important!!!

OCAsian•

Can you return the $500 purchase?

4
fsbbemOP•

I haven't looked into it. If I could, that would be ideal for me. However, I really don't like returning beauty products unless there's a quality issue or they're damaged. Its wasteful, so I do my best to find a use for it. And at the end of the day, I willingly gambled on this so I'm not sure its entirely fair to return everything just because the risk didn't pan out. I do think farmacy sucks for using 2 sheet masks as 2 full sized items though. I'll stand by that all day lol ✊🙍‍♀️

7
OCAsian•

Oh I see. That’s why I won’t spend more than $20 for a mystery bag. Too risky. What if it’s full of junk I won’t use?

2
amynicole78•

So the way l look at mystery bags and other large GWP offers is if l am going to spend the money anyway then sure, but there's no way l would buy it outright. If l was going to spend 250$ at Farmacy anyway then it's a fantastic freebie. Sorry you disappointed though.

Holy mother of god that’s just too expensive. I got half of those for $6-$12 from BoxyCharm or their monthly sales. Love everything from that brand, but no way would I pay that much for them.

2
[deleted]•

That’s horrible

1
graywoman7•

Your math is off. You can’t combine the subscription with the 15% off so there’s no way to get the price down to $119. It’s still not right to call a mask a full size item but it is worth $142 plus the bag itself.

I ordered this today and I am disappointed that I did without trying to see what was in it first. Then I saw a review and then a video with the same items… sigh
