Contemporary underrated California bands (READ THIS!)
Hi r/shoegaze folks. I want to provide you with some Bandcamp links to some underrated contemporary California artists that I really appreciate and I think that you might as well.
My name is Ryan and I am the primary songwriter for the San Francisco-based noise-pop group Lavender Blush. I used to play in the San Diego-based group Moonbeams and the SF group LSD and the Search for God. I played bass on LSD's second record. I think LSD is appropriately rated. Maybe the second record is overlooked...but I'm biased. Ha!
One of the best new-ish California groups is topographies. Their earlier stuff is a bit more shoegaze-oriented and their new stuff is a lot more post-punk, but it still has a ton of shoegaze influence. Jérémie from topographies often plays in Lavender Blush as well.
I really enjoy EST from San Diego as well. Synthy, dreamy, Beach House-esque songs. They put on a heck of a live show too. Their guitarist, JC, is a friend of mine from my San Diego days.
Pure Hex from SF is also certainly worth checking out. Super fun live energy. Seeing them perform reminds me of seeing Whirr perform in their early days (without their current baggage, of course). Loud and fun.
Some of my best friends from the SF music scene are Slowness. Dream pop meets slowcore. A lot of their music invokes Galaxie 500, Low, even R.E.M. sometimes. Super underrated, super beautiful.
Starry Eyed Cadet from SF is worth checking out. Especially if you're into Sarah Records-esque indue-pop. The group shares some members with Sweet Trip and Roby joins them from time to time.
Quali from San Diego are also super awesome. Beautiful guitar work. Great music for fans of Duster. Super dynamic live performers.
Speaking of San Diego...what about Lovenote? Hopefully they release more music than this one song. If they don't, this one song alone makes up for it.
How about Sacramento? Check out Soft Science, Desario, and Ghostplay. Fans of Lush might like Soft Science, fans of Ride might like Desario, and Ghostplay...they are super unique but, for me at least, recall Atlas Sound, Deerhunter, and, in certain way, surf music.
My favorite groups from Los Angeles are Winter (LISTEN NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T YET), Sonoda (for fans of Broadcast, beautiful music in general), Tennis System (named after an excellent Lilys track...they are an EXCELLENT live group), the super underrated Flash Hits (the songwriter of this group, Damien, is the brother of Matty from Tennis System...Damien's former group Sounds of Kaleidoscope is also with checking out). Finally, wow...Tashaki Miyaki is absolutely worth checking out if you like Mazzy Star, the Mary Chain, the Velvet Underground, etc. Sandi, the bassist/vocalist, sang live with LSD and the Search for God when I was in the group.
And...is there something even happening in Bakersfield? YEP. Fawns of Love.
