The Celtics had a treasure trove and the nets had nothing and still the nets built a better team than the Celtics in just a couple years. I will look forward to feasting on Bill's salty tears

I know it’s fun to shit on the Celtics bc we all hate Bill but the the C’s have consistently been in the playoffs and made 2 conference finals in the last 5 years, not every rebuild will end in a championship so to act like the Celtics squandered their opportunity seems like a false narrative.

bchancellor97•

3 conference finals in 4 years, only year they missed was with kyrie. Kind of a hell of a run but they were consistently underdogs every time

geesftschoolboyq•

Getting there 3 out of 4 when they had expectations to make the finals is definitely underachieving. And how much does that really mean when the east had 2-3 teams for years

4

The heat series was a tossup. Really, they should have won that series.

Healthy Gordo and we win :(

I think the reason why this narrative exists is because until the Nets the East has felt a bit weak. There hasn’t been the Final Boss of the East recently until this year.

Outside of Lebron I agree. Not sure if that was your implication just wanted to add on

Lol yeah I totally misread the original comment I was just thinking the last 2 years

5

But also that Cavs team was a shell of itself by the end, especially that last year.

Making the ECF is equivalent to a first round exit in the West, especially from 17-20

7
britneybser•

maybe 2nd round but yes totally

True, i love seeing all those "eastern conference finals participant" banners in the rafters

3 conference finals

It will end in a championship

The Nets got 3 guys in their prime from free agency/trade and the Celtics had to wait years for any of those picks to amount to anything and overachieved the entire time through that. Basically no one wins a championship before 27 and Jayson is 23 and Jaylen is 24 (I know there are counter examples but it's usually at least 27). Now, I was totally on board the trading for James Harden trade if they wanted to compete right now, because young teams don't win championships and you functionally need a guy who is an MVP (literally only 4 counterexamples of this since Magic entered the league). But they rebuilt through free agency, which is obviously a lot quicker and much harder to do outside of like 4 metros.

It's not fair to judge Trade Exception in a COVID season. Things have been wonky. They just have.

Wait until April, and he'll be putting up 20/10.

A lot of guys have been talking about the after effects of having COVID. Trade Exception was saying how it wasn’t until 3 months after that he finally felt right. It makes sense when you see how strong he’s come on after starting slow.

Is Trade Exception in the Garden rafters yet?

After what they did to IT, Celtics got some bad karma

Alright, but if IT had stayed and stunk would you not have clowned the Celtics for not trading him for Kyrie?

100 I woulda, i was pro the trade at the time. karma be savage

So people hate Bill Simmons so much they evolve their team rooting interests around him?

That'll show him!

My love or hate for Bill Simmons have no effect on my utter and all-consuming hatred for Boston sports

I’m an Atlanta fan and it just feels good to see this when Bill is actively rooting against the hawks and has money on their win total under

6
[deleted]•

Not even just the hawks but the franchise and their fans.

A very mature and well balanced dude.

Uhh yeah. Makes for better content.

KayfabeAdjace•

I've been puzzled by all the overheated Atlanta takes I have seen this year, and not just from Bill. All the angst and recriminations over this seasons' losses seem pretty overblown when you remember that they were basically roadkill last season. I'd have counted a frisky play-in game challenge or a first round exit as a win this year but somehow it feels like the goalposts have been shifted.

7
[deleted]•

As a hawks fan I agree. It makes no sense, it could be the length of our rebuild that has shifted the narrative.

Like Ja and SGA are still in that honeymoon phase. I was pretty shocked at Trae getting 3% in KOC’s poll of who you would want to build around.

2
HSYFTW•

Don’t be shocked if the Celtics use $5-7MM of that exception on a 9th man. Who’s to say if some stiff will be better or worse than Gordon Hayward?

Don’t forget, they also signed the washed up Tristan Thompson. He was once an ok role player and carried the Cavs to multiple finals.
