Getting shamed at the coffee shop for asking for a 'Regular size latte' when I should've asked for a 'Medium size latte'!

As someone who's worked in a coffee shop and been told that regular means small, medium, and large by various customers, I get it.

As an ex Starbucks barista, regular is definitely medium to me but the amount of people who actually wanted a small when asking for a regular was too many.
I always ask for medium. If they ask do I want regular I ask "how often are the regular ones/"
Back when I worked from work I knew exactly which places sold regulars and which sold mediums. If I went back now I wouldn't have a clue.
I enjoy a mocha but every member of staff says it differently and I now have to try and remember how to say it for that person to stop them rolling their eyes when I get it 'wrong'.
I'm assuming this is Starbucks. The coffee is awful. Neros please.
Just a milky coffee please.

Is it possible to get a white coffee made by adding cold milk? Or is easier to just keep drinking it black? I don't like warm milk in my coffee.
I love the look of disgust/horror swiftly followed by the menu being repeated to you by the staff when you ask for just a coffee. Yes I can read the board which of the fancy words mean coffee with milk in a cup not a bloody bucket. I know it's latte but I do it out of spite of how pretentious most coffee shops are.
It isn't pretentious, they have a lot of different types of coffee. A latte is something quite specific, I'd assume if someone came in ordering a "coffee" without a qualifier they'd want a filter coffee or an Americano. A bit like going into McDonalds and asking for a "burger", they aren't being ridiculous if they check which actual one!
I'm not implying the staff or customers are pretentious. It's the actual company's. Extortionate price's for an average coffee at best but if we give them fancy names it makes it all better. Ooh look a Grande Frappuccino I could almost believe I'm in Italy.
They are all actual drinks though. Latte is espresso with steamed milk. A frappucino is iced isn't it? It is like going into a pub and saying they are being pretentious for making people specify which cocktail or type of beer they want and charging accordingly! If you want a dead plain coffee like you get at home with instant and a splash of milk I'd honestly just take your own in a flask.
What's a pub?
But coffee kept in a flask tastes horrible (IMO). It certainly doesn't taste like a fresh made cup of instant.
I avoid these places because I don’t know what to order. I just want a bog standard cup of coffee, not some fancy flat-avocado-latte with whatever in it. And they’re too bloody expensive. Used to be able to get a coffee for 10p in a cafe, now it’s like £3 or something. Bah.
Last time I went to Starbucks I deliberately asked for a large white coffee to see what turned up. I got a large white coffee.
I think they keep a jar of Nescafé by the kettle for Yorkshire blokes.
Pretty sure they have a pot of filter coffee going, how long it sits there I am unsure but it may be the default if someone just says "coffee". It is often what I ask for as I like a strong black coffee but espressos are comically small and an Americano is often piss weak.
a large, normal white coffee please
