REPOST: Therapeutic techniques for managing during the MOASS. It is not the strongest or smartest that succeed, it is those who can adapt.
Hey fellow apes, psychology student here with experience in clinical work (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy/attachment theory) and research focused on genetics and addiction. Allow me to lay down some precious knowledge to help you manage your emotions and stay logical when $GME goes WHOOOOOSH past the moon.
First things first, your brain knows this is exciting and fun, your body does not. As the price increases, so will the activity of your ‘fight or flight’ system. When this system is kicked into high gear you are prone to impulsive decision making. Impulsivity is something worth avoiding while your watching the price swing during the MOASS.
I've chosen techniques that can be achieved WHILE watching a ticker, you are welcome!
No TLDR so I'll keep it short and sweet for you apes.
Step 1: Identify Nervous System (NS)/emotive Dysregulation
- Fidgeting
- Leg tapping
- Clenched jaw
- Shallow/fast breathing
- Naseau
- Irritability
- Pronounced nervousness/excitement
There are more indicators but these are the most common and, like I said, this will be short and sweet. Now that you have some ques to hone in on, lets talk about how to respond.
The next three steps will work from high to low dysregulation. They're not linear so do what you feel will be most helpful to your mind and body. If the NS is to dysregulated than lower level techniques will not be helpful - work your way down from Step 2-4. Let's turn your nervous energy into enthusiastic focus!
Step 2: Regulative Techniques for High Levels of Dysregulation
- Dancing (creates sense of control, allows difficult/overwhelming emotions to move through body)
- Workout (jumping jacks, burpees, pull ups, push ups, boxing, etc. | helps to allocate and expel emotive buildup in body)
- 'Knees to Knees' (sit facing someone with your knees touching, place palms against theirs and press hard, then rest and take a deep breath before repeating cycle of pressing, resting and then breathing)
Step 3: Regulative Techniques for Moderate Levels of Dysregulation
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping (using your fingertips, tap on centre of forehead and/or collarbone(s) while focusing on breath and speaking positive affirmations)
- Chest Pressure (hug a pillow or blanket to your chest and focus on deep breaths)
- Active Stretching/Flow Yoga (move from one active stretch to the next without pause, you should constantly be in movement rather then holding a position)
Step 4: Regulative Techniques for Low Levels of Dysregulation
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) (alternatively tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups)
- Behavioural Relaxation Training (focus on relaxing muscles in one area of your body at a time - try to work from head to toes or toes to head)
- Write it Down (I'm sure we all know journalling is good for the body and mind but seriously, how cool would it be to have a written account - jotting down how you feel and what you are thinking would suffice for this scenario - of the moment your life changed forever?)
Start practicing these techniques when your NS is not activated and they will be even more effective when the MOASS hits. And remember, it is not the strongest or smartest that are most successful, it's those who can adapt.
Obligatory 🚀🪐🦍🍌
