Overly optimistic POV

Well guys here we are. We still have Barnes, Buddy, Bagley, Whiteside and Holmes on the roster. But the good news is, we still have our FRP. I know I’m a little disappointed in our direction but, I think it’s pretty obvious what our direction is right now. Though I don’t agree with it but it did have me thinking about the roster.

Our best lineup is Fox/Haliburton/Buddy/Barnes/Holmes. I think it’s pretty obvious the outlier here is Buddy. Though, his presence tilts the floor for everyone else, the fear is, there is always a 35% chance when he touches the ball, it’s not going to be good. With the trades yesterday it made me think how everyone fits. Is it time to bench Buddy? Does Harkless replace Buddy in the starting lineup? Putting a guy who only plays defense and rebounds in the Buddy spot will hurt the spacing but, Fox/Rese/Barnes have been so money from 3, how much would it really effect the spacing?

Wright is a backup PG, his numbers suggest he’s like a Haliburton-lite. But the wrap on him (coming from my Pistons friend) is that he’s too indecisive and gets caught a lot in that “should I pass or should I shoot” situation. Well off the bench, with Buddy, I think we all know the answer. Set up Buddy and Woodard and as of recently Metu.

Also, in terms of the cap and Holmes. With the trade for Wright, we may have limited the extra cap room we’ll have available to keep Holmes. But, i think Wright is easily moveable at the draft. Wright is a solid backup PG who could be had for 2 seconds and I can easily see a team who was unable to snag the backup PG late in the draft that they expected to be there. I don’t think is 8.5m tough to to move.

Though I do think gunning for the 10seed is a mistake with Lakers, Clippers, Suns, warriors (just in the same division!!) it’s going to be tough for the next few seasons. All 4 other teams have a least 2 players on Foxs level or better. Earlier in the season I personally had Monte at a B+ for the roster moves up until the deadline, now I’ve put incomplete, I need to wait until the season plays out. Would it be a failure if this team scratched and clawed its way into the 8th seed? (Fuck the play in) no, maybe that challenge would be good for the development of the young guys.

Oh and “the Flash Bros” was a pretty clever nickname for our backcourt of the future.

I tend to agree with most of what you wrote, and feel that the immediate emotional backlash yesterday in this sub was understandable but misguided.

Wright is right. Concerns of roster flexibility made me literally eye roll yesterday- the Kings are not just gaining ~6m salary next year (Wright - CoJo), you have to factor in that the team needs a backup PG. A Yogi type min player or Guy/Ramsay is not competitive, they were always going to pay someone. Wright has the blend of skills they'd want in that spot (defense/ballhandling) and this way they can see if he fits instead of signing and praying. If not, that's an easily moveable, + asset contract. Pretty savvy. Buddy is and always has been the player they need to move, if not Bagley. It's really not about Wright at all.

Davis is 23, Silva is 24. Young talent that they've been able to evaluate at an NBA level. Perfect use of borderline useless assets.

Further, it has become pretty damn clear that as long as Fox and Hali are starting and with the easy remaining schedule, they were never ever going to be bad enough to completely tank. That combined with the leveled odds anyways and I can see why they would be more eager to just develop the team to plan and let the chips lie where they fall.

Look, I get the disappointment angle because it was so damn hyped, but these are small winning moves that the Kings have historically not made. This deadline gave me confidence that there is a measured plan in place. McNair has spoken about threading the needle, he was never tanking, and a realized agenda is so refreshing if not totally satisfying. The knee-jerk Vivek puppetmaster nonsense is getting tired. They're righting the ship, dont jump now.

Maybe we can package Bagley with our FRP to move up in the draft 🤷‍♂️

I like the idea of trading Bagley + 2021 FRP + 2023 FRP to move up high in this draft.

sexi_boiMarvin Bagley III•

I think he'll use that combination with buddy as well possibly to get another established star

I think the problem with an established star is the salary. With a FRP on a rookie deal, you'd be able to keep Fox/Hali/Buddy/Barnes (maybe Holmes)

I keep seeing Holmes being floated around as someone who we may have to let go, and I am a bit confused by it. Obviously I could be completely mistaken when speaking as I am not well versed in how salaries work, but could we resign him as an MLE guy? That would give us $10 million to work with. We could also sign him under the cap before we sign our rookie with about $10 million as that is how much we are under the cap. I don't see us going after anyone in the offseason at this point that would greatly affect the cap. Can someone explain to me why it may be difficult to sign Holmes?

I like this too. We need us some Mobley

And some Kuminga, and some Cade

That’s a possibility. Though, I still believe in Bagley. I think his game is best suited for playing the 5, only he’s not big enough to play against starting 5s. I think Bagley is a completely different player at 25 simply because he’ll fill out his frame more. He’d be able to take all of those bumps and still finish (I.E. Fox this year vs his rookie/Soph season) so, I feel like Bagley has more value for the kings 3 years from now than he does right now. But, with his drama and if we get a good offer, it wouldn’t kill me if we moved on from him. I think I’d reach out to Fox and Rese to see if they feel bags is detrimental to the locker room. If they tell me no, that most of the smoke is just the outside but there’s unity in the locker room. I’d keep Bagley. Next season he could be a very good bench big next to Buddy and Wright.

SeanWonder•

That lies a potential problem right there at the end of your paragraph. Granted it's an outside perspective, but from what we've seen I doubt Bagley would be happily comfortable taking a bench role on this team

ShadowChicken032OPDe'Aaron Fox•

I think you’re absolutely correct. I think he and Buddy have that problem. But if we’re competitive and maybe Monte just tells them to shut the fuck up. They aren’t getting traded anytime soon with their value as low as it is. But, it’ll hurt Bagleys feelings if he wants to resign with us. But we hold all the power right now. We can match anything in RFA. Which is still far away. Also, maybe Monte tells their agents, “look we lowkey don’t want y’all either, so just play ball, around the draft we can see what we can do”. But also, ever sense Bagley asked for that clear out and then immediately turned it over, he’s shut up and played within the offense. So I think Bagley will try to fit in.

Winning helps. Even if it’s just the 8th seed

SeanWonder•

Winning will definitely help and I think it did help earlier in the season when we were balling out for that stretch. If we're still a subpar to bad team by season's end though then it might get a bit rough in the off-season. I'm at the point now where both of them can go but only with a solid return

2

The line-up you mentioned with Buddy is one of the best in the league—top-10—so I’m not inclined to fuck wit that.

I think what needs to happen is that our bench guys need to put in work and hopefully Delon and Terrance would help with that effort, along with our own young guys. I have really high hopes for Justin James, Woodard, Guy, and Metu (Metu the most, honestly)

11
FerromagneticfluidSlamson•

Yeah, we honestly are losing games because of our bench. Our starters score 90%+ of our points often.

ShadowChicken032OPDe'Aaron Fox•

I like the Davis pick up. He reminds me a lot of Buddy. When Buddy is 0-9 from deep and isn’t giving us much else, Luke can turn to Davis. I think it creates competition for Buddy.

3
thecondoregg•

The lineup of fox/Hali/buddy/Barnes/Holmes is by far our best lineup buddy for all his flaws is still highly respected as a shooter and we’ve won 5 of 6 there is no way we change our starting lineup

7
ShadowChicken032OPDe'Aaron Fox•

Two of those wins where practically game winners and another one of those wins was against the warriors G-league team. I think “we’ve won 5 of 6” is a little overrated. If Fox misses that game winner against the Wiz and a couple of his pull-ups miss agains the Celtics, we lose that game too. I like our lineup with Buddy in it, if, he doesn’t touch the ball much other than catch and shoot 3s. I think Buddy with that group is better in theory than it actually is. If we had a 3&D guy there, a league average shooter, I think that lineup has the same success. And I think Davis is going to prove that to us.

4
DrR_OSIRIS•

I feel like Buddy will probably be gone soon anyways to clear up cap space, unless he proves his worth, which could be used by Monte to maybe resign Holmes and future FAs. I also like that idea of experimenting and replacing Buddy in the line up for a more defensive wing, maybe like Harkless for now.

3
WrathODBKings•

I lightweight calculated the kings salary for next season to start right around $91 million. And I thought I read the luxury cap space is up to $130 mil. I don’t think keeping richuan will be an issue. And that would have our roster at 10 I believe. So I think we’re fine on that respect.

3
sexi_boiMarvin Bagley III•

Buddy isn't going anywhere. Small-ball is what they're trying to do.

2
AViciousGrapePeja Stojakovic•

I dont think Buddy can play at the forward spot long-term though.

1
ShadowChicken032OPDe'Aaron Fox•

I don’t think so either, which is why I expect him to move to the bench for Harkless. Harkless at the 3 on defense, at the 4 on offense.

1
boringexplanation•

My bold prediction is that one of Minnesota or Houston is not going to hit top 3 (Minn would lose their pick entirely/Houston would pick swap with OKC) and the insufferable “tanking” advocates will keep absolute quiet about losing on purpose for no benefit.

Meanwhile Kings will hit again with the 3rd pick with the odds flattened out.

1
ShadowChicken032OPDe'Aaron Fox•

So you're saying the basketball gods will bless us due to our undying competitive spirt? The basketball gods smiled down on us and blesses us with a chance at Luka, will it happen again? Either way Fox/Rese backcourt looks fun as fuck. lol.

1

Even with flattened odds the chances of a top 4 pick are really low after the 9th slot. It's possible, but really not likely. Kings have a better shot at the playoffs than a top 4 pick according to 538 (not counting the playin I believe). Either way Houston or Twolves having to give up their pick shouldn't make pro tankers on the Kings side of things quiet. We have no chance at giving up our pick so that wasn't a concern.
