Why achievements have to be so boring ?

I'm quite new to gaming after returning to it after +10 yrs break, when I finish a game I'd like to get all achievements too and that's because I don't want to dump them once I finish them just after 20hrs gameplay since I'm not into doing re-runs but my god why the achievements have to be so boring ? I have only played a few games like Death Stranding, Control, Alien: Isolation and Tomb Raider(2/3) and I've given up on %100ing them with the exception of Control(dragging myself with that one too).

Why can't they have the achievements to be actually interesting ? like finish a particular mission in x minutes or don't take damage killing x number of enemies, but instead we have "oh find 1000 tiny items that we have hidden in every corner of the game that you'll need to watch YT to actually find them", am I just picking the wrong games or all games have this bs going for them ?

The best thing you can ever do for your own sanity is completely ignore achievements. Pretend they don't even exist and never look at them. Just play the game for fun. When it isn't fun anymore find a new one to play.

This. As an achievement hunter, achievements have completely killed the fun in many games for me. To the point I don’t even want to replay the game in the future.

I feel you, some time ago I tried completely ignoring trophies, hiding notifications, eg...sometimes it ruined the fun out of a game, but then I went back because some games are fun to platinum, or there are others that trophies are almost like getting 100% of game completion which I think is fine.

What I really dislike are trophies that make you kill the same enemy 10000 times or collect this 100 collectibles that doesn't even have a story behind it (Looking at uncharted series). Funny enough I couldn't care less about steam or xbox achievements.

But the complete lack of achievements in most Switch games, let me play the games freely and I end up enjoying them more. I spent almost 300 hundred hours playing Fire Emblem TH going trough multiple playthroughs but dropped Sekiro after 2 playthrough plat (save backuping). I loved both games but when I get the platinum I tend to drop the game right after.

Also turn off the pop ups! I hate being pulled out of my game immersion

with the very specific exception of that one achievement from portal 2

yes. if you want to get more out of games after beating them, challange runs are usually way better than achievement hunting from my experience

This is correct. OP, I'm also recently returned to gaming and like you, wanted to get into achievements and 100%ing games... it's not worth it. Games will start to feel like a chore rather than fun. I wish achievements were better but they usually suck, unfortunately. You'll have more fun playing the game on its own terms.

Most achievements are based around the completion of what the game has to offer to the player in terms of content. Achieving the platinum should be seen as semi-completion or full completion of the game, what matters of it anyway.

Some games force you to grab "x amount of items" because they don't have better content, or the content is based on an assurance that in-depth exploration is being achieved.

To be perfectly honest, not every game does this. Bloodborne's most outrageous trophies are those related to acquiring all weapons and tools in the game, and there aren't that many weapons anyway (and you are interested in grabbing them since they're all so unique and cool). If a game forces you to grab 300 items from puzzles it's because those are part of the content of the game, whether that's a good thing or not, that's up to you.

Most of the boring achievements are there because 1) some people love collecting stuff, 2) they often don't take skill so anyone with the time and will can do them, even if with the help of a guide, and 3) they're cheap and easy to implement. Also of course there are those "metrics achievements" that measure how many people complete the game to a certain point or do certain side activities.

Different people have wildly different expectations for achievements in general: is it just main singleplayer content or does it also have challenges like you mentioned? Should multiplayer be included and does it affect possible platinum trophy on Playstation? Does DLC have achievements?

I haven't tried getting 100% on purpose in a long time just because of various achievements that are just not fun, like collecting the feathers in Assassin's Creed 2 or other games requiring multiple playthroughs. Individual ones can be fun though, either as a notification like "cleared a room without touching the floor" in Scourgebringer or, as you mentioned, as guidance for challenges or playstyles.

oh find 1000 tiny items that we have hidden in every corner of the game

What is wrong with that? I love scavenger hunts. I love exploring every single nook and cranny. I love how these achievement shows how much details the devs put into the world.

Maybe you don't. But I don't enjoy hard achievements like kill a impossible boss in a impossible time.

Play games with more interesting achievements lists. I had so much fun getting all the achievements in Horizon Zero Dawn. I only go for every achievement if it looks like it would be fun and not repetitive getting everything.

Well you did those achievements, so I guess you've got the Big Dummy sign on your forehead? Achievements are very cheap content extension. Lazy game design, no effort put into this stuff.

Why can't they have the achievements to be actually interesting ?

Because that's actual game design and production work. If they're doing serious work, they don't need to call it an "achievement" anymore. In fact it's probably better if they call it something else, so that it doesn't get perceived as cheap filler. Achievements are like the Reality TV of gaming. You don't have to pay a real writer to make a real script. You just say "make X numeric threshold" and, voila! Some idiot on Steam wastes another hour or two of their life, 'cuz, stuff put in front of them.

am I just picking the wrong games or all games have this bs going for them?

You are picking the wrong games, and also allowing yourself to be bamboozled by content that is obviously shit. Probably because you haven't figured out anything better.

You'll need to spend more time picking games, to avoid this crap. Just like if you flip channels on TV, you can't just stop wherever the dial lands.

Because through the almost 15 years of data game companies have through achievements they've learned which ones drive player engagement, which cause achievement/trophy hunters to buy games, and which ones drive them away. The fact of the matter is that most people who play video games aren't good at them so if you want them to engage with your achievement/trophy system you need achievements that are easy for unskilled players to get. The people who collect achievements tend to go for quantity over quality, preferring multiple 1000/1000 Gamerscore/Platinum Trophies to working on getting one high quality one.

Easy answer - Achievements aren't there for you, they're there for the marketing department of the company who released the game.

They aren't achievements, they're metrics. They're designed to datamine...

  1. What difficulty did you play?
  2. How far into the game did you play?
  3. What weapons did you prefer?
  4. What skills did you prefer?
  5. Did you grind?
  6. Did you play multiplayer?
  7. How much multiplayer did you play?
  8. What morality did you play (in an RPG)?
  9. What companions did you use the most (in an RPG)?
  10. What companions did you romance?

It then drives decisions, if Marketing finds that a lot of people played on "Hard" and quit before the halfway point, they'll nerf "Hard" difficulty to "Normal" assuming it meant you quit because it was too hard.

That's why they're boring, because they aren't there for Gamers.

I love all of the achievements in the soulsborne games because completing them all means you have basically seen almost every nook and cranny and done mostly everything that the games have to offer.

I just got the platinum in Bloodborne, and I actually feel really satisfied

I always thought a lot of games missed a trick with this - it felt like all too often games either had very boring achievements, had achivements that involved their tacked on MP, or had some extreme achievements that you could only ever get if you spent like 100s of hours with the game. I've never really cared about achievements, but I think a lot of that is because 99% of the time I just know I'll never get 100% of them in a game (because it involves some defunct MP or something), or it's just a boring list of things you can do in the game.

The thing is, it's two-fold though - achievements tend to be unimaginative and rarely encourage different ways to play the game, but I personally don't think achivements by themselves are enough of a reward to encourage some of the effort they'd require to earn them. I am sure some people see the idea of earning an achivement hardly anybody else has as motivation enough, but it's such a lucklustre reward really.

I was always surprised that what Uplay do didn't catch on more widely - where there are certain achivements that can be earned that give you Uplay points, which you can then use to unlock exclusive items, etc. Achievements being linked to being able to earn specific rewards, even visual skins, etc is a more interesting concept to me as a motivator and reward imo

The Uplay points are garbage.

It's an interesting system, and I liked it at first, but it's been terrible ever since Ubisoft decided that the points have a limited life span.

When does this expiration rule go into effect?

Since April 1, 2019, you have 24 months to spend your Units.

Can I retrieve the Units that have expired?

Once your Units expire, they disappear from your Ubisoft Account and cannot be retrieved.

1
Dr_Nonchalance•

Yeah its for sure a flawed concept - I didnt actually realise they had expiry points, which makes sense as I was wondering how I burned through mine! I do think the overall broad concept has merit though

Play non mainstream games. Prey is a Reddit favourite and has really good achievements on the PS4, encouraging multiple playthroughs with different play styles and builds.
