Canadian looking to buy computer for gaming/graphic design. Budget of $5000 CAD.
Are you open to refurbs/used
No, I’d like something new.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don’t care whatsoever about 2 in 1 style stuff. Performance, build quality, and battery life are what matter to me, in that order.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight and thinness aren’t a concern.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17in preferred, would take most in 15.6-17in screen range.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming/Graphic design are huge things for me. Need to be able to run the full Adobe suite and high end games.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I’m not entirely sure what I want to be playing at in terms of FPS, I’ve never even played on something above 60. So preferably north of 120. In terms of what I’m playing I play a lot of looter shooters (think destiny 2). I will be playing a large variety of games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I’d prefer a durable on board keyboard, but other than the reliable build quality the rest is not necessary.
I’d like to approach my budget range, so over the top is good.
It’s worth noting, I know next to nothing about PC/laptops, it kinda feels like I’m wading through dark water.
I would go over budget if I could get 300 refresh rate, a kickass processor, 2TB of storage, 32 GB of ram, 4K or 1440p and a 17in screen.

Hi, your expectations are a bit high, but the Razer Blade Pro 17 comes very close to what you're looking for. At $4,599.99, the top end configuration comes with a 8-core i7-10875H processor, RTX 3080 100W graphics, 32 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and a 4K 17.3" 120Hz IPS touch display. It is a very powerful option for games at max settings 4K, Adobe programs, general use, etc.
The only thing I don’t understand is whether the 120 HZ refresh rate with 4K is effective refresh rate, or the base refresh rate.
I’m getting the feeling it’s not possible to have a 3080, 4k, and 144 refresh rate or above all at once. Thank you for the suggestion.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "effective" and "base" refresh rate. 120Hz is 120Hz... that's refresh rate. There's no other number.
