With Balfour Beatty involved it'd probably turn out to be a square.

If this was real I'd be all for it

Bit late for an April fool?

Didn't see it until after 12, figured it counts all day..

DrPeroxide•

What day are you on mate?

4
henry_kr•

1st of April. Traditionally April Fools must be done before midday.

DrPeroxide•

I thought midday wasn't till 5pm these days? Nevertheless, thanks for the info, I didn't know that.

I hope the fishtank will be more impressive this time round.

Reading the comments and hearing things when out and about, people seem to have a real nostalgia for the hole in the road. I assume they weren't alive when it was there, cos it was a piss-stenched, tramp infested shit hole which was dodgy af... I guess you can't tell that from a photo or a song.

Nostalgia's just not what it used to be.

Yes I always assume that they're nostalgic about being a kid going that way to the castle market, rather than dwelling on the memories of being in an oppressive concrete pit with a whiff of petrol fumes!

Nailed it, friend. The Hole in the Road and the market area were scarier during the evening hours than Havelock Square at night. The city was a shithole in the 80s, but it was OUR shithole.

Do you mean that's what it turned into? I've seen early pictures and heard stories it was nice at first (obviously). It's just not in a nice area at all anymore.

Yeah that's what I mean.

It probably was nice looking in the 70's when it was built. In the 80's when I was a lad, however, it was a total dump. Stank of piss, had no law (even saw skinheads, football lads and maybe even punks beating the shite out of each other on one occasion), was dark and run down, there was tons of winos (and probably smackheads) and maintenance was generally ignored by the council.

Back then they did have bigger fish to fry though, the whole city was a mess, a lot of people didn't have jobs, most of the east end was made up of totally deserted factories and steel works. Up until the tram project started, and they began to knock down some of the more horrible bits of the city centre, it didn't get much better for years. Even after that it's taken another 30 years for town to make something of itself, and even then the old market area down that way is still a dump!

It's still home to me though, but I've got to say it's MUCH nicer now. The rose-tinted view of the old brutalist city centre seems a little crazy to me. I appreciate that a lot of people love it now, but trust me- you didn't have to live with it!

People forget modernist architecture was meant to be disposable, replaceable, modular... in theory you could extend the life of a structure by maintaining and adapting it over it's life. This was never done however and cheap concrete edifices age terribly and quickly, speeding up the degradation of any given area faster than needs be. Things just left to rot, with a highly suspect substrate... whole cities of this shit around the country. It's not brutalism or modernisms fault - they came up with the solutions that were needed at the time. It's the lack of political will to follow through on anything of substance that leads to the decay of urban centres.

I was a child when it was there, all I remember is stopping to look at the fish tank then my Nan buying me some sweets from the newsagent before heading to Castle Market for her shop.

I did miss the smell of stale piss

Amey: "Hole, not a hole. Don't care. As long as we can kill some trees."

We have this in our front room. One of Sheffield’s finest

Amey are going to collect all the smaller holes in our citys roads and combine them to recreate the hole in the road.

Due to the sheer depth this will be, they have decided to recreate kelvin flats, vertically, inside the hole in the road.

Amey should plant some trees in it this time

2023 more like 2027

2
pihkaltih•

Is it possible to still get under there for Urbex or was it entirely filled in?

2
yaxu•

Would definitely be an improvement, that area is a total mess for pedestrians to navigate now

1
mollymoo•

Nah, it’d be terrible. There’s a reason nobody builds pedestrian underpasses any more.

2
jonesthecorpse•

Can't even keep the current shops we have occupied. But, yes, I realize this is a hoax.

1
XADEBRAVO•

Pointless petition probably being set up as we speak, but hell it would be fun!

1
MRRichAllen1976•

This is a joke, the former "Hole in the Road" was filled in and is now Castle Square Tram stop.

I don't think anyone'd be daft enough to fall for it, today of all days.
