Martyrdom and Holy Characters
This is not a fully-formed thought but it just came to me on a reread. So we see in RoW that Dalinar is beginning to take on a holy status to some members of the Vorin church, and presumably others. The more obvious reaction to this is to treat it as foreshadowing to him possibly assuming a shard, be it a reconstituted Honor-type shard, Odium's, or some mixture of the two.
But what if instead it is setting up his martyrdom? That theme of self-sacrifice comes up a lot in the series, and particularly its more religious/Jesus-y aspects. There's a lot of religious iconography of this with the Oathpact and the Heralds being quasi-deities, and even Honor probably making a kamikaze run on Oldium to keep Rayse bound in Roshar. With the way the contest of champions is set up and Dalinar himself being on the line as a potential prize, I think this hints at his martyrdom. We can't know the precise sequence of events that would lead to it, but I think his 'holiness' would be sealed up if he comes to be identifed as the Leader that Sacrificed Himself for his People. And in the backhalf, we might even see a Church of Dalinar-type organization.
It's not very well thought-out, but thoughts?

I think that would be too much of a rehash of (MB) >!Kelsier.!< If it will be anyone, it’ll be Kaladin as he’s a very clear foil to the former in many ways. Their worlds are intended to be foils, so having opposing faiths based around spear iconography would be rather interesting.
There's this beauty that sums it up pretty well.
