Thru hiking the sierra madre oriental?

Hey guys,

Ì wonder if people do hiking from monterrey south along the mountain ridges towards the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve?

It seems pretty wild and remote without any nearby roads and I just wonder if its A) Safe and not crossing any drug cartel routes and B) How many days of food/water I usually need to carry with me as it seems pretty remote and far from villages.
