Stuff I found intersting

Upstate was one of 60 research sites in the U.S. testing the Pfizer vaccine in 12- to 15-year-olds. Pfizer and BioNTech, co-developers of the vaccine, announced today that the clinical trials of children 12 to 15 showed 100% efficacy, meaning none of those receiving the vaccine developed Covid-19.

and

“Children who have been infected are at risk for developing multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, known as MIS-C, even if their initial illness was mild or asymptomatic,” Domachowske said in a news release. “We need safe and effective vaccines for children to keep them healthy, to prevent MIS-C, and to reduce potential transmission to others.”

and

Upstate plans to enroll 200 to 250 children. That shouldn’t be a problem, Domachowske said, because about 1,000 parents have already contacted Upstate to ask that their children be included.

Turning our kids into guinea pigs. Firm no from me.

Any single medicine or vaccine before now that has been given to a child was tested on a child at some point. Even tylenol and the MMR vaccine.

Cool- let your kids do the testing, then. I’ll reserve such choices for when more information is available and seems safe and suitable. Thank you for your response. Good day.

I wonder what it's like to be a parent and think, let me submit my child to a test that could severely effect their health.

They think the possibility and long terms affects of a deadly virus are worse than the possibility of harm from preventing that.

If you are genuinely curious, then I can tell you it’s been a long year of keeping the kids home and isolated. That this type of isolation is bad for their emotional and mental growth and development. These vaccines have been tested quiet a bit already and that the trials will be mostly testing titration (which means appropriate dosing). I trust in science and the technology these vaccines use are mRNA (which means they are not given the actual virus but give the body information on how to fight the virus if they recognize the virus). More than 100 millions doses have been given out to adults with amazing results. It’s a medical miracle. Covid and the isolation we have been enduring is a bigger threat to the kids than the vaccine trial. It’s about risk assessment which is why a lot of parents are signing their kids up. And if you did understand science and public health, you would know that the more people vaccinated means the less variants and less likely covid continues within society. So it helps my family selfishly but it may help you and others too that kids aren’t a vector spreading this virus. We live in a society, not just a group of selfish individuals touting “I’m free to go maskless and free to continue dangerous behavior that encourages a virus to continue living and spreading from person to person”. That’s what it’s like to be a parent wanting the trial for their kids and I think it’s a very easy decision.

If you’re just being snarky and nothing I can say will convince you, then you do you internet stranger. But maybe someone else will read this and I hope it helps them.

In the article they state that children may get mis-c even if the child had mild or asymptomatic covid19.

The way they're doing the testing will be starting at a very low dose and they will raise it until they start to see the same symptoms that researchers are seeing I the 12-15 age bracket.

If you read the article or even my comment then you'd know it's not like they're scarificing them or something.

Well I'll tell you as someone who has a 10 month old who was born 2 months early the debate is real. He hasn't had an opportunity to engage with others his age and we've let very few family members see him to this point. I feel like the royal babies are seen more. We haven't even taken him into a store to this point.

It's a sad day for society when a very fair comment about children's health and safety gets downvoted.

It’s not like this is the first medical trial on children. How do you think medications for children get tested?

13
DuMondie•

Long-term animal studies where the children aren't the animals.

None of these injections have been approved by the FDA. It's amazing that people are willing to sacrifice their healthy kids this way, especially when the data shows that children are the best at handling the virus without episode, precisely how natural herd immunity should be acquired.

But it’s a medical trial. Isn’t that something that happens before/in order to get fda approval? If it were already approved, there would be no need for the trial?

I’m pretty sure they do animal trials and then after that human trials. It’s not animal trials instead of human. They do both.

If you read the article or my comment then you'd know children can have I'll effects because they got covid.

This isn't being done emotionally by some idiots. It's being tested by doctors, researchers, and the fda has explicitly stated that the potential pros out weigh the potential cons.

As a parent, I don't believe that is a good faith comment, and deserves to be downvoted. It is implying that any parent that chooses to participate in the trial is making a decision that puts their child at risk for no benefit.

That is not the case. The benefit is that we get closer to understanding how to protect all children (including the ones in the study) from the effects of COVID (which is more dangerous than the vaccine in every population group in which it has been tested, and there is no reason to think it will be any different for young children.

If a parent chooses to drive their kid somewhere, despite knowing full well that many children are killed every year in car accidents, would you ask why they are "submitting their child" to a dangerous activity? No, of course not. You likely understand the tradeoffs involved, and that the risk is being mitigated in a variety of ways (just like the risk are being mitigated in this trial).

DuMondie•

The data shows that Covid isn't a risk to children and they handle exposure with ease, but you are willing to gamble on something foreign put into their veins that hasn't yet been approved by the FDA for some truly unknown outcome.

This is about you, not your child.

JshWrightManlius•

The "data" does not show that COVID isn't a risk to children. It shows that it is a low risk. Similarly, the mRNA vaccine is not without risk. However, we have a significant amount of evidence to suggest that it is extremely low risk (much lower than the (very real) risk that COVID poses). We now have data from hundreds of millions of vaccinations worldwide, and have seen an extremely low rate of adverse events. There is no reason to expect that will be any different in young children, but Pfizer is still doing the responsible thing and starting with very low dosing, just to be safe.

It's pretty clear that this is just ignorant fear mongering on your part (e.g. "put into their veins"... that's not how this works, but it sounds "scary")

Read the linked article, at the very least. There's a solid risk of long-term inflammatory effects

What year did you graduate? Did it still say "Upstate Medical Center" on the diploma or had it changed to "Upstate Medical University"?

Don’t bother. I got bashed earlier for questioning the same thing. Unfortunately, most people don’t bother to research on their own. https://www.openvaers.com/covid-data
